The Mongol Rally - Team Mongolian Job

My CarPC project is on hold for the moment as I have another distraction. Me and a friend of mine have decide to enter a charity rally from London to Mongolia. The route 10,000 mile goes through 13 countries, 5 mountain ranges and 2 deserts. The only rule is the car must not have an engine size over 1 litre. Because it will take 3 or 4 weeks to get there you give the car away to charity at the end, as it will take too long to get it back. So we bought a 1l 1990 Fiat Panda 4x4 for 500UKP. 300 of that was for the brand new Yokohama mud and snow tyres. Now we've got around five months to learn how the thing works so we can fix it on route.
I did think about using the kit i've got to put a pc in the panda, but have decided against it, because of our route. In Russia a foreigner with GPS will be arrested on spying charges, so I've decided not to risk it. Shame though, because a hard disk full of mp3s would be a massive help on a month long road trip.
I'm currently working a night shift, so thought I'd post to try and drum up some banter/support.
Our website is at www.team-mongolian-job.com so have a look round. The main charity we are supporting is Send A Cow which sends high yield animals to Africa. If you fancy donating, and help wuld be much appreciated. We aim to raise a few thousand.

My parents worked for a company where a guy did get arrested (then released) for a similar charge, the thing is, if you are running around with GPS around say a military base (as he was) then your *** will be hauled off. Other than that, there shouldn't be a problem. Russia actually supplies signal for GPS modules (different than the American, but still usable).
I would recommend checking with consulates of every country you are going to be going through, you can check on the legality issues and with any luck, get some sort of letters of recomendations.
I have found you an argument; I am not obliged to find you an understanding.

I'm now considering taking a CarPC, as it will be useful for MP3s, DVDs and storing pictures. I've got a few VIA 1200 kicking around from when I was going to build a carPC before and memory. But with the expense of trying to get an old banger running, I think the only way I'm going to do this with help. Basically, if anyone wants to help sending a carPC to mongolia, then I would be grateful for any spare bits and bobs. I'm not fussy, any old bits will do. Screens with faulty touch screens, power supplies that are on the small side, dented cases, disks with sectors missing, anything. It would help if you were in the UK, keeping postage down. If you are interested don't send stuff yet, just post on this thread. I don't want to take bits of people if I can't finish the project. In return I'll happily plug you or your company on our site www.team-mongolian-job.com and if you have a logo, I'll stick it on the car.
Then again you can just abuse me for blatantly trying to blag some kit. Honestly, rip into me. Then go to the site and donate to the charities, Save the Children and Send a COw, to make yourself feel better about having a go at me.

    Hey there phatbenny!

Nice to see another Mongol Rally-er, and CarPuter-er... and Beemer Driver-er! I'm in Team QuidGrid.com. I've also got a 318 !! How much have you managed to raise thus far? We've only got about 70 quid. Really need to start getting us some money in soon. Are you going to the next meet in June? If so, will see you there!

    All the best!

Yeah - should be! Hopefully we wont get imprisonned or shot! Some hostile countries we're going through. Visa applications are well expensive too!
