well how long have you been fannyign around with it???

sometimes it is better to just get on with it and rebuild the engine - its not that hard to do youself and gaskets won't cost much. At the end of the day if the car has not been looked after i would rather take the time to do it properly 1st time than spend months tryign to sort it.

if you are taking it to toyota to look at then their labour will be sky high. either do it yourself or findsome local guy who you know to do it. Engine rebuilds do not cost that much - considering the peace of mind you get. Take today for an example - you have wasted an hour and a half waiting for the tow truck. If that continues how much time are you goign to waste over the next few months with it?

True, but I would spend two weeks and at least $500 rebuilding it. This was just one hitch, and will be fixed easy. I am ashamed to have taken it to Toyota, I really wanted this car to be my own work, but that's just the way things go sometimes. If I blew a hose, it wouldn't be more than $30 to replace. If a belt came off, probably more.

i am firm believer of doing things proplerly - hence why i still dont have my car PC. your car is your pride and joy - that is obvious. And it is also obvious you know what you are doing around cars and are not afraid to learn more so my suggestion is get to know that car like the back of your hand like i do with my pug. The only thing i have never done is a complete engine rebuild - they scare me - but they are not that hard if you ahve somewhere to do it. jsut make sure you have good quality tools - bes thting i to get second hand decent quality stuff. Cheap tools last 5 minutes and damage the bolts/parts.

With an older car like the MR2 the only jobs you wont be able to do yourself are engine work like skimming the heads, balancing work, refurb the turbos and electronics (jsut go down the breakers and get new electronics). If you have a local garage get to know them. I ahve a few garages who will change bearings for me, separate exhausts with the welding torch and lend me special tools - in exchange i take em some beer or pay them cash in hand for things like tracking.

    Good luck with it.

Oooof. This car needs some work. Toyota is going to be replacing these (not me ):

    Timing Belt
    Crank Seal
    Cam Seal
    Water Temperature Sensor

And the reason it broke down today is because there was no coolant, which I had just filled a week ago.

Ouch! while they have the timing belt off get em to check the water pump if it is behind it (like on some engines). the shafts corrode and damage the seals then you have to take it all apart again

By seals do you eman the gaskets? jsut pray that your cylinder head has not been cracked by the overheating

Today is a day for delays.

Picked up my car. Made it about 3 miles out and BAM. CEL comes on and the water temp is off the scale. Pulled it over, waited 10 minutes, drove to a grocery store in the direction of the shop. Stopped, got some donuts, came back out, made it another half mile. Pulled over. Waited for the light to turn green while it was cool. Started it up, went through the light. Pulled over for another 10 minutes. Started it up, made it another .5 mile. pulled over. Started it up, made it a whole mile. Continued until I made it to the shop.

I live my life .5 miles at a time, for those 10 minutes or less, I'm ****ED OFF.

Wouldn't it have been faster to call up your mate to help you pull the car?
