File/web/print Server

Hey guys I want to set up a server at home. I will be connecting maybe 4 computers to the server. I want to be able to serve files and have seperate accounts for users that can be accessed on any of the computers. I'm taking a networking class at school now so I know most of the basics.

I wanted to know if you guys knew of any really good sources online that could help me out. I been googleing and most of the stuff that comes up is outdated. Mostly for windows 98.

All the computers will be windows and one will be a dual boot with linux, haven't decided which distro yet. I looked at samba and though of useing a linux box for the server. but I thing I might just use the windows box as a server, but if i do this I won't be able to network the dual boot linux box to it correct?

Also I'm thinking of a old dell p3 450 mHz computer I have laying around for the server. Should this be fine or should I get something new, (I'm in the mood of spending some cash

)

Any help is appreciated. Also help me come up with some good names for the server and workstations. thanks.

I took a more detailed look on that article and maybe it's not what you actually wanted. Sorry about that.
Regardless tomsnetworking.com is a very good source of information.
Anyway I'll search more and try to help.

Yeah, I just finished reading/skimming throught the article, but it deals with wiring the house for a network. Thanks for help anyway, I think I'll check out the rest of the site as well.

So how many of you are using samba for you setups?

I have a windows 2003 server right now, i've used samba before and it worked pretty good. But it's been a few years, if you download Fedora Core from Redhat it has provisions for setting up stuff like that out of the box.

If you decide to use linux I suggest SME Server (it is at contribs.org)
It is a all in one linux server. I have used it for several company installs (it is almost a drop in replacement for Small Business Server).
