    Credit Card <rant>

Ok so I've been with my current creditcard company (capital one) for 4 and a half years it was my 1st card and my only card up untill recently. It packs a lovely 19% APR but I dont really care because i never have a balance i just pay it off right away. I've called them 3 times in the last 6 mos to get a lower APR and they wont do it. I pay every bill on time and never have missed a pmt. It must be because they havent made a dime on me the reason why they cant offer me a better APR? I'm at a loss. I'm most likely going to cancel the card and they will probably send me paperowrk to open a new account with a lower apr but that is just total crap. anyone know this little game they plan and how to play back. Ive since gotten a card with a much better apr so basically SCREW THEM.</rant>

I had a similiar problem just yesterday. I have automatic payments set up on my credit card. On the first of the month it takes money out of my bank to make the payment. Unknown to me, my minimum payment went up and the amount taken out was lower then my payment should have been. This resulted in a $30 late fee and my APR going up to an insane 27.9%!! I called them and asked for it to be lower. The lady on the phone said, "I'm sorry, we don't have a better rate to offer you at this time. Make your payment for the next 6-12 months on time and call us back then." I told her there was no way that I was waiting that long with such an unreasonable APR and asked to talk to her supervisor. She placed me on hold, and then a minute later came back and said, "My supervisor adjusted your rate to 15%."
There is the key: When you call, you are talking to idiots that don't want to be bothered helping you out, and probably can't anyway. Go above them to get anything done. Now that you have a different card tell the supervisor that if they can't beat the APR on your other card that you are just going to cancel the account because of the way they treated you.

On the whole, the *goal* of the @#$@% credit card companies is to
make money off folks like you and me

They do this by paying lots of $ to money to people who are experts on making complex rules that everyone has a hard time following.
Then they make sure the change the details of the rules.
They have plenty of folks there running the statistics on "if we offer crappy rates... will too many people cancel their cards?"
Some do... but enough folks dont..... so the credit card companies keep pulling that crap...

The goal is to trip up the customer, and get them to pay.
I got fed up with the entire credit card thing, canceled them, and only use a debit card.

If it is your first card keep it open or it will mess up your FICO score. Also write a letter to captial one, it is more effective. If you never carry a balance (which is a very good and correct thing, then APR really does not matter). Now if you an annual fee, ask them to drop it, if you need more credit ask them to increase it, or if you have a short grace period (28 days) as them to extend it (45 days).

I just signed up for a Chase CC no Anual fee, and all the good stuff with a 7.99% Fixed APR after oct 2006 0% untill then.
I dont plan to carry a balance so even if the APR was higher it wouldent be a big deal.

Oh my experiences with credit cards are bad. They f*ed me over many times. One time they sent in the wrong numbers to the credit bureau's so it dropped my credit like 50+ points, when i was trying to get a loan! oh but they dont care i could have lost my deposit. So i call and askto talk to the manager. What does she do?, puts me on hold, hopping i just hang up. So after about 15mins i get to speak to her. Oh i let her have it. I needed all my credit card information faxed to me now. This is after i have spoken to them before and they were suppose to send me what i need on a monday, and here i am calling on a tuesday. So then she says " oh im sorry i dont have a fax machine here for me to use" WTF???? Oh i went off like wtf you are a manager and dont have a fax machine? I ripped her a new one making her feel a bit stupid for even saying that. I man geesh, i asked if she even knew how to operate one. So after a few more mins of that, she finally says " ok ill use my" yes she said MY "fax machine". So i wanted a few mins and it came through. Guess what. It was the wrong **** and way to small for me to read. I guess she got a little ****ed at what i said. I said it in a nice and sweet voice. I must have gotten to her. Then i faxed back asking for her to please send me it again it is to small for me to read please hit zoom 100%. So she faxes me stuff again. Still nothing i needed. Lucky to say i got the loan and the problem was fixed within a few month.
Ok thanks i needed to get that out. If i had not already done so.

Ive had at least 10 credit cards ever since I was 18. Maybe I was lucky, but i was always able to get low aprs or zero aprs. When I went to get my car, she checked my credit report and said it was excellent.

Im 22 btw and I have missed a few payments, but my apr never went up.

i think about the only thing you can do is call saying you want to close your account. dont' start asking to lower your apr ... just come right out of the gate with you want to close your account. usually they'll get a supervisor on the line who will ask if there's anything they can do to get you to keep the account open.

explain you keep getting all these offers for cards with lower rates. if she still says she can't lower your apr, cancel it and apply for one with chase or someone else.

edit: i'm in the same boat as nappy jim ... missed 2 payments in the past 7 years i think. apr never went up and they were never reported to the credit bureaus. credit score has always been great and never had a problem getting a loan.
