Umm, isn't the story about decendants apologizing for things their ancestors did? These people (I'm guessing) aren't racist as they are trying to make amends for things their ancenstors did. Nothing wrong with that and it seems a nice gesture on their part.

Since when do you have to answer for someone elses sins to go to "heaven"? Or are you referring to the victim's families forgiving them.

exactally ... I was wondering the same thing. From what I could tell none of the people in the article themselves did any lynching. And it didn't say really if they themselves were racist (although I think EVERYONE is racist to some extent).

However the whole apologizing for the actions of your ancestors thing is moronic. Why the hell should ANYONE have to apologize for what happened long before they were even born. Did *I* personally have any influence on what my ancestors did?

Now recognizing that what happened in the past was wrong is another thing. That's fine ... but apologizing suggests we're taking responsibility, and *I* was not responsible in any way for what happened. If you want me to say it's wrong, I will, but I'll NEVER apologize for something my great grandparents, or even parents did (which was nothing in regards to this topic actually).

So are we going to condem the people this article was written about for what happened two generations before them?

Should all germans apologize to Jews for the actions of the Nazis? Should all Muslims apologize for the actions of a few extremists on 9/11? Of course not! the most you can expect from them would be condemnation of actions carried out by others.

I don't see how the first post in this thread has anything to do with the story it's linked to.

It's about people apologizing for the shameful actions of somewhat distant relatives. I don't see how this makes them racist assholes trying to get into heaven. Most of these people couldn't have been alive at the time that the crimes quoted happened. Just seems like a kind gesture and a step towards putting the past behind.

they were asking for forgiveness for what their ANCESTORS did to the other peoples ANCESTORS.
