I use PS on a daily basis and pretty much have used it all the time since 2.0, I bought my copy at a yard sale for $20!

Photoshop 7 is a great version and still works fine.

CS (version 8) added a few things that only high end graphics people give a **** about but it also added the "non-square pixel preview" allowing you to make images destined for the television without having to muck around changing resolutions to keep your circles from turning into ovals.

CS2 (version 9) just added more high end stuff and tweaked the interface a bit. Im happy with every photoshop since 6.0. Though when 7 came out they changed the line tool from a simple LINE TOOL to a complicated one.

Any Photoshop questions, Ill be your Guru, I know most of it inside and out.

Truth be told, if you dont know how to use Photoshop to at least tweak and crop and edit your digital pics (downloaded or otherwise) you are severely lacking in todays digital world.

Photoshop may cost $1000+ (for the suite and non academic) but Adobe realizes everyone and their pets has a copy, pirated, copied whatever. And I think they dont care, the more who know Photoshop the more people that will use photoshop in their careers. And when you own a business you have to have your own copy of Photoshop, cuz if you try to make money using Photoshop and Adobe asks you for your registration number, you are fuct.

Basic users rejoice, use photoshop in your daily lives it will make you a better human being.

Download, or create (if you have something like Bryce or a 3D program, or even Paint) some pics. Then just go to town on them.

RULE NUMBER GODDAMN ******* NUMBER ONE OF PHOTOSHOP:

    DO NOT USE FILTERS!!!!!!

Of course it is tempting with all the cool stock filters and everything. But they are there to help an image, not make it. Dont think you shouldnt ever use them, but use them sparingly and you will be surprised at the results. Im just a tiny bit bitter because you see tons of "digital art" that is simply a good photograph with 1 or 2 filters applied.

The best photoshop "class" is a good book outlining all the tools of the latest version, and then just have fun. Create your own desktops, thats the best way to learn. Cut, paste, learn the magic wand tool, learn the tweaks you can do to each tool. Learn the keyboard shortcuts for "fit to screen, deselect, select inverse, and all the tools". Ive been using photoshop for years and I still dont know everything it has to offer. Practice makes perfect.

OH and the cloning stamp/healing brush/pattern brush/history brush, are your best friends. With them you can do the "ultimate" photoshop trick of deleting something unwanted from a photo and leaving no trace. Dont like granny in the family portrait, clone stamp the background over her face, and she disappears.

Depending on what you want to get from photoshop, you can learn all you need in 1 hour, or never. Quick to learn is cropping, changing image sizes and outputs, brightness/contrast, saturations, levels etc. All the basic optical tools.

If you want to make 100% digital pictures, its gonna take a lot more time. But you build up your skills everytime you open and save.

if you need to know how to do "X" to "Y" while not changing "Z" or whatever, I am hear to listen and answer!
