Usually I just call them or go to the dealer for a test drive the car I want. Give them my ODD price. If they okay, I take the car, if not, thank you and I go to the next dealer. 5 of our new car/van was purchase that way.
Most the time, the saleman just ask to come inside as he ask his manager/supervisor. I said okay and give them 5 minutes. I start counting at the watch at the end of my words.

I am usually a good haggler (I guess most experience from buying fireworks lol) but when it came to my car shopping seeing as how my choice was from about 11 monte carlos in the NW (only a few of which were SS's) I didn't have much room to haggle.

Needless to say we got my SS (1 year older but less miles) for about a thousand over the LS we were about to buy so I think we did good =P SS + High sport appearance package and premium sound mind you =P

when i was at a ford dealer ship as a salesperson, i can state for a fact they do not make hardly any money at all on "NEW" cars/trucks, all the money is made on "USED" vechiles.

another interesting thing, invoice price is NOT what the dealer pays for the car, there is what is called "dealer withholding" which is a discount off the invoice price to what the dealership actually paid for the car, this can be anywhere from 500-2000$ on different stuff that i have seen

as far as employee pricing, ford is prob handing out the B- or X- plan stuff, not too bad, but the really good pricing is A-plan(although only ford corp employees/immediate family) can get this. and incase u are wondering, the dealership still makes money off these(even though they are much much less then dealer price minus withholding. ford pays them a flat rate for a-plan sales)

Ford introduced their own "employee discount" program too, I just got a letter from them advertising it.
I have found you an argument; I am not obliged to find you an understanding.

but where is the fun in buying a car? I love having frends parents ask me to go with them to haggle, cuz im such an *** to dealers who arent doing what they want.

Like not honoring an advertised newspaper add, the model was the same, the vin was the same and yet they told me its not the same car and it costs more than the advertised price. I said I dont give a ****, you said its going for this, I want it for this. But then again if you are selling THIS car for THIS much, but I dont want this option or this option, it should be cheaper.... well sir actually we dont sell Air Conditioning without power package. Yeah but I dont want power seats, just windows and locks. Well we cant find a car with that configuration sir. Well then gimme this car with all the bells and whistles and since I dont want what you are giving me, I aint paying for it.

They dropped the car $1500 off the newspapers price.

My mom was ready to take the car as it was.

    Thumbs up Research

Do most of you relise that the industry you are shopping in is one of the few where you can acctually see an invoice price, and so what if the dealer is making some money, obviously they need to feed a family to. Think about the last car stereo purchase you made if you bought it from a retail store then it had at least 100% markup over its cost to the store. If you think a car dealership is screwing you then think again. Yes some dealerships are out to screw people and yes they should be avoided. But there are plenty out there willing to get you in to a car at a price fair to you and the dealership. A salesperson only goes back and forth with you because they are a pawn being told what to do by there boss. Furthermore there is no dealership owned by a manufacturer, hence there all privetly owned and that owner must pay some pretty hefty operating costs not to mention that a typical dealership costs over 4 million. and if you are having trouble with a dealership not following its adds etc. there is laws against this. So if you want to get a good deal on a vehicle then why dont you spend the time to research what car you want how much your willing to spend on it and what to say to the dealer, go a step further and look up those laws that regulate a dealership, theres several hundred of them.

    PS RESEARCH RESEARCH RESEARCH!!!!!!!!!

I got into a huge fight with a honda dealer, he was a douchebag.

Seems that all the dealerships in this town (Gainesville, FL) realize that there is only one dealer per manufacturer, unless you go an hour or so away, more if you want "big city" dealers. So they figure, you want a honda, you aint going anywhere else. There is just no competition to keep prices interesting.

Anyway I got into a fight about a price on a car, I had an "invoice" price on this Civic they had. And I gave him an offer of like $500 over that, and he still said "but we wont make a profit". And I said, yes you will you are making at least $500, AND I KNOW you get it for less than the invoice price I got anyway. So dont gimme that crap. And he continues to say he cant run a business selling cars that little over invoice and ****. So I say "Look pal, it aint my fault you seem to wish to have a dealership building on the most expensive plot of commercial land in town, or have gigantic glass showrooms and fancy ties and ****". He just sat there. SO I said "If I gave you $1 over your cost, its a profit. How you spend your profit is not my business, but im giving you at least $500 here and you still wont budge" he told me no, you cant afford this car. He said I wanted a car without air conditioning for that price, and I asked "Do you even have any cars without AC?" he said no. "I said thanks for ruining my idea of driving a Honda, *******" and I walked out.

**** WADE RAULERSON! YOU SUCK MY LEFT NUT.

    im not bitter.

Down the road to Toyota, and bam i got what I wanted for a good price.

Though I said flatly "If I see one license plate holder, one sticker, one THING with "GatorLand Toyota" on it, im bringing the car back and asking for $5000 to do this "advertising" for you as I drive around town, dealer said there wouldnt be one.

Thing was, my car was a "dealer trade" cuz they didnt have a stick shift, from Michigan or something. So I know it didnt have the sticker on it when it arrived. So i pick up the car and BAM it has a sticker on it. So I told the dealer "you are a douchebag, just cuz most people dont realize you can remove the sticker with your fingers, I WILL NOT give you free advertising." And he said hed have it removed while i finished the paperwork. 2 hrs later, sticker still there and I just picked it off with my fingers, rolled it into a ball and stuck it into the huge pile of cash I brought for a down payment.

If you have a sticker or whatnot on your car advertising the dealership, WHY HAVENT U REMOVED IT?

See, that's why I do it over the phone with several dealers. We have a multiples of same make around, but I still called dealers 2-5 hours away just so I had more people to deal with. There was no heated discussion, no nothing. Very professional and quick. Simple "yes I'll play this game" or "no, thanks".

As for the advertising, I agree. I warned them before I picked it up, I wouldn't take the car with any sort of frame, logo, etc. It came with none.

Before I started doing things the way I described above, I bought a 4Runner, the "bad way", I walked in. 3 hours of haggling later, I think I still got a crap deal. I learned.

As for a dealer making a profit. Of course they get to make a profit. I was actually an easy sale for them. I talked to the Sales Manager on the phone for a total of about 10 minutes, he did the vehicle search while we were talking. Picking up the car took another 1/2 hour. 40 minutes for whatever profit they got from me. If they didn't like it they should have said no like the some other dealers.
    My worklog.
Status: VM GTI sold, got out of the CarPC tinkering hobby, but I still think about getting back in.
