Well 2fast was partly right....
I come from an peninsular in NW England just over the River Mersey from Liverpool and just over the River Dee from North Wales. I come from the posher areas so don't have a scouse accent (unlike a lot of people from that area and North Wales). Unlike my sister who is proud to be a scouser as she was born in Liverpool and grew up there for a few years and has always hanged around with riff-raff and her accent has got worse over the years! (I have never lived in Liverpool and born in Peterborough).
Anyway, when I came down south to Univeristy in 1999 meeting a northerner and someone form near liverpool was a novelty to all these southern fairies and in explaining where I came from (near Liverpool to keep it simple for the ignorant southerners) they assumed I was a scouser and I did have a slight twang while saying words such as 'bear' and 'chicken'. I didnt like the name at first but the longer I was away from 'oop-north' the fonder of it I got and I became well known all over the UK with the thanks of my skiing mates who told their friends about me and when they came down they all seemed to know me already!
The monkey bit was added by my best mates girlfriend at the time as I was a bit cheeky (and a monkey) so that kind of stuck and now most girls call me monkey and most of the guys call me scouse. Except my best mate who now calls me Andy as we are getting old.
