You hit the 2nd and the 1st takes off.
No I don't, cause I left plenty of room, and my brakes were just bled and changed.

That's what supposed to happen. I always track the next 2 or 3 cars myself to keep my reaction time to a minimum.

Though as far as it always being your fault when rearending someone, there should be exceptions I think. If someone does something totally inane and nonsensical, I think it should be on them. For instance, trying to set a personal best 60 to 0 on the highway for no discernable reason.

I would personally disagree with the exceptions thing (minus the someone pulling out in front of you exception). Even if someone slams on their breaks in the middle of the freeway just for fun and you hit them that means you were following too closely (against the law). If you were following too closely when someone did it for fun or when someone had to for another reason you should still be penalized and have to learn your lesson. In the case when someone did it for fun then I think you should both be penalized. IMO

You can't do that with a standard, and most automatics have protection against reverse at speed.

    Nice try though.

I hear what your saying, and that's the way I drive, perfect record (knock on wood, I probably just jinxed myself), but if criminals can exploit law or regulation for gain, there should be some provision to address it. The particular scenario I'm talking about is someone trying to get you to hit them. Never had this happen to myself, but it might be trickier than you think.

Let's say your driving down the highway at 65mph, your not tailing the car in front of you. Say you have 4 car lengths between you. (which most people don't around here, partially due to congestion, you're lucky if big rigs leave a car length or two behind you). Let's say for the sake of argument that you're not near any exits. No one in front of the guy your trailing. Sparse and fast.

Now a lot of driving is anticipating what others are going to do. Now slamming the brakes at speed with nothing ahead of you is a totally nonsensical thing. , Not saying there couldn't be valid reason, but for the most part, there's never a need to do so if there is nothing in front of you.

Most people won't anticipate this and will most likely interpret initially that they're going to slow down and will likely cost them some reaction time when they realize that the idiot is actually trying to stop.

And in a scenario like this, every car behind loses more reaction time than the next on a busy highway. Enough cars in a pack and someone is going to hit.

But yeah, the vast majority of the time, it's tailgaiting.

Doesn't matter, you are expected to always leave enough room in front of you
for you to stop. And If another car behind you hits you, and slams you into the
front car (which you would not have hit otherwise) then it is the driver behinds
    fault.

The slamming in reverse example is for stationary vehicles at a junction etc.

It is a well know technique if someone is chasing you. YOu rev the car up, and slam it into reverse quickly so your rear end lifts up over their front bumper. Then your bumper smashes their radiator ut causes minimal damage to your car. They cannot follow you as their radiator is now gushing steam

XBrandy, you are just like F#cking dead brain. All you think is rear end, is rear fault. You got no brain, no other route?? The law is freaking dead, and your brain is death too???

I can think of one more situation where rear-ending someone isn't your fault.
I was riding with a friend once and when the person in front him hit their brakes and came to a stop. He stopped too, but just barely. A split second later, the person behind us hit us fast enough that it pushed us into the car in front of us. Luckily there was no damage to his front end or the car in front os us, but he got a settlement from the guy who hit us.
Old plans out the window because of an accident .
