yeah well you usually see macs with vodeo editing studios that want to look good with their studio displays and such, or you see mac lappys with liberal arts college know-it-all hippies.

no it is not "only because linux is not big enough"

i hate people who argue this because its completly untrue, there are several reasons why linux is not plagued by viruses and spyware and while a smaller userbase than windows helps it is most definatly not the only, or even the primary reason

on another note, mac is not linux

personally, i don't run any antivirus or firewalls, and i have never gotten anything. maybe I'm lucky, but i don't think viruses are a big problem anymore.

that is until windows vista comes out.

Asking this question is going to start a flame war. You'll need to divide out many of the opinions you get because there are rabid opinions on both sides that will fight to the death over whether one is better than the other.

Okay, now that you've filtered out that noise, figure out if the Mac does what you want it to. Word process? Surf? Photos? Music? What do you want to do? Look at the software available to do these things ON THE MAC and forget about comparing it to Windows.

If you like it, buy it. If you hate it, sell it later.

I use Windows XP all day long at work and use my Mac at home and in the car. They both have their good points. Neither one does everything better but I have a personal preference for the way the Mac does it.

It doesn't bother me that people think I'm either stupid, gullible, or some kind of dope smoking graphics nut because of that. I have what works for me and that's what I need. You should decide the same.

What it looks like to me is that you are attracted by the Mac's appearance.

But it sounds like you know nothing about them and don't even know why you'd want to switch. Since this is the case, don't get one.

In my experience, the following groups of people are the only ones who use macs:

    1. Girls, age 12-25, because they're "pretty"
    2. Gay men, for the same reason
    3. Theatre Majors (see #2)
    4. Graphic designers, musicians, and other 'artsy' people, which IMHO are the only ones who have an excuse

If you are not one of those people, you do not need to pay twice as much for a laptop just because it's a mac.
