I am not sure I want to use acetone from a hardware store, because of quality issues. Just like you can have different grades of nitrous oxide (automotive quality, foodservice quality, and healthcare quality), I am sure the same is true about other chemicals such as acetone. There would be more stringent quality control testing done on the acetone you would get for human use than the kind that you would get for stripping paint off houses, for example. So far (although I am still only quarter of a way through the first tank), results are promising. I am going to hold off on saying how promising until I actually have some factual data and numbers to post, but I hope you guys will continue to let me know how things work out for you as well. Good luck, will post results soon!

ya, let us know, curious to see what your results are.

for anyone interested here is a link to a wiki artical where a bunch of people are recording results and discussing. the wiki is based on the artical posted at the start of this thread.

Okay folks, the first tank's done and here are the results (my original thread will also be edited for the summary section):

Tank number: 1 with acetone, 1 with this acetone mix
    Acetone mix: 2.667 oz./10 gal.
    Miles this tank: 379.0 miles

    Extenuating circumstances

Car was left running but just idling for 4-5 hours, probably burned up 10-20 miles worth of gas.

    Other notes

Found out my fuel gauge is whacked out. At 3/4 tank, I had gone 150 miles (this was very promising for the acetone mix, as it would have given me about 600 miles to the tank). At 1/2 tank, I had gone about 225 miles. At 1/4 tank, I had gone about 300 miles. And when I ran it until it was empty (as I'm doing since this experiment started), it was at 379 miles. So the fuel gauge has a really weird way of measuring how much fuel I have left.

    Exceptions to control situation

I am basing my normal gas usage on when I filled up before I started the experiment, which was around 360-380 miles. My record for the van is 460 miles (running until empty). Since I started this experiment now I'm running until completely empty and the car sputters and stalls out. So the mileage should reflect this and be significantly more than my usual 360-380 miles, unless it actually has a detrimental effect.

I am 90 miles into a tank with about 3oz per 10 gallon acetone mix. I have definately noticed a slight increase in engine power, and it was warmer and more humid where i am the last couple of days so I dont think it could be attributed to colder fall weather.

The acetone that used i bought at a local true value hardware store. It says 100% pure and has no other ingredients. I think it was $11.50 for a gallon (128 oz if i am not mistaken). I used 6 oz for the first time knowing that i have a 20 gallon tank in my car. I usually get 500 miles between fill ups and have about 2 gallons left in the tank when i fill up.(will pump around 18 gallons)

I will also post any results i get.

And of course i cannot suggest that anyone does this to their car. If it blows up dont yell at me.

I was gonna try this acetone mix in a diesel car, but got interested else where.

Instead I decided to run on 75% vegetable oil and 25% diesel, have already done 50miles with this mix, so far so good. The engine feel smoother, smell like deep fryer, some report increase in power and efficiency. Will do a 400miles MPG test soon. If all is well then Ill start adding some acetone to the mix.

My plan is to run on 100% vegtable oil and acetone

You want to try buying fuel in UK... Its currently about £4.65/gallon for Super Unleaded, thats over $8.50 /gallon !!! and because I like driving so much I have a car that does about 25miles/gallon

The detrimental effect will more likely come from running the engine out of gas. It's undesirable to do it once by accident, but doing it intentionally over and over again is seriously asking for trouble. The recommended method would be to run it until it's almost out, then go fill up using the same fuel pump every time, allowing the nozzle to auto-stop. Calculate the miles/gallon according to the trip odometer and fuel pump display.
