What sort of connection?

Hi all

Hmm got abit of a problem, dunno what Im looking for, I want a keyword to use for googling.

Heres the situation >>>

Lets say I have a modem connected to COM2 on a desktop PC. This modem dials another modem. On dialling, the remote modem responds, answer the call and establish a connection with the desktop PC. The dialler then create a virtual comport...COM3 lets say.

From there on, the virtual COM3 is now available to any software such a GPS apps. COM3 is not involved in the dialling process, authentication and such. Data will only appear in COM3 once the connection is established.

Can this be done in windows XP using the network wizzard?

What am I looking for?

If I understand what you are saying you can just use a com port splitter to do that. Set the port you will be reading/writing from and then you can set up virtual ports.

I really liked Serial Splitter; It would work great for this type of thing.

Thanks for the info, yes I guess that will work.

But can it be done using windows XP network connection setup alone? Like a dial up and then let the dial up serve the GPS application once a connection is made. The GPS application is served through a virtual comport created by the dial up.

If possible Im trying to stay away from a third party SW.

I'm pretty sure there isn't anything like this built into Win. XP. I'm pretty familiar with dial-up networking with all versions of Windows and never seen anything like this.

Any idea what sort of connection is this?

The thing with a normal dial up, the comport stay open and therefore the GPS apps gives out an error when trying to access that comport.

However I have managed to dial manually using hyperterminal, typing AT commands. Once its all connected I can then close hyperterminal freeing up the port where the modem is at. The GPS apps can then be run using the com port of the modem...spitting out the NMEA sentences from the remote site.

Ya, I'm not sure of how to get around that without 3rd party software
