    Drunk Driving Speech

OK well my new speech for my speech class is on drunk driving. In the speech we have to list the "problems" for our topic. Here are the problems of drunk driving:
    A. According to a 2002 report by Patrick D. Quinlan, of the over 159 million alcohol-impaired driving trips reported by Americans in 2002, over 44 percent, or 71 million trips, were made by moderate drinkers.
    B. Approximately 18 million Americans — 8.5 percent of the population meets the diagnostic criteria for alcohol abuse or alcoholism.
    C. About three in every ten Americans will be involved in an alcohol-related crash at some time in their lives. (NHTSA, 2001)
    D. In 2002, 2.3% of Americans 18 and older reported alcohol-impaired driving compared with only 2.1% in 1997. (Quinlan, et al, 2005)

Our next step is to "Prove each aspect of the problems raised" Either a testimony or statistics or what not. My question is how would i prove each aspect to the problems i listed. Can someone help me out.....

Usually it's just being irresponsible when they are drunk. Ever heard the term beer muscles? When someone is drunk, they don't really understand their true capabilities. Basically it lowers their inhibitions so any doubts they may have in themselves are thrown out. They think they can pick up any girl, kick the **** out of anyone, and drive just fine.

The other possibility is lack of options. I know I've driven a few times after a few drinks because my designated driver went home with someone else or got drunk. I drove once when I considered myself drunk and I swore it'd never happen again. I have driven a few times when I was buzzed because of the previous reasons (designated driver flaked). I have also left my car parked and taken a cab home in these situations when I felt I had one to many.

I guess it's just about knowing yourself and your limits. I do not suggest drinking and driving, but if you know you can handle X drinks well, then know that if you have X+1 drinks, you shouldn't drive. I know I'll probably get flamed for even having a few drinks and driving, but I don't do it often at all. I also know myself well enough to know when my abilities are impaired.

Well, you didn't really list "problems" - you listed statistics. Your list is really part of your proof or evidence.

You need to come up with a new list of "problems" i.e.

    A. Drunk driving is a huge problem.

    B. Drunk driving causes death and injury

    C. and property damage

    D. the harm is not all caused by raving alcoholics

    Proof:

This is true because Patrick D. Quinlan's report shows....

And because according to the NHTSB ......

Also, Can Anybody help me out what triggers people to drink and drive? Like why do they do it? For example stress, problems with someone
You want the truth or what your teacher wants to hear?

In reality it is a combination of people with drinking problems and people who drink fairly responsibly (1 or 2 glasses of wine or beer with dinner) and younger people who want to go out and have a good time with their friends and are still at an age where they feel indestructable, and don't have the experience to realize their ability to drive is impaired and lack the judgement once they have been drinking to realize they shouldn't drive.

    Good luck.

How else am I gonna get home from the bar with the ***** I wanna bang

On a side note, drunk driving sucks. I was a Paramedic for about 7 years in NYC. While I remember many stories, one that sticks in my mind, and give me chills (even as I write this right now) involved a drunk driver who barreled into a car, head on, after crossing a very large center divider, killing a woman and her granddaughter. To make it worse, of course, the drunk driver wasn't seriously hurt. That might be terrible, but it gets worse. My partner and I were only the equivalent of 15 blocks or so away when we saw smoke rising from the highway. We started to head over there, thinking it was just a car fire or a brush fire. We got there to find the womans car on fire, and her trapped inside. We were able to get the back door open, and remove the baby, but the woman driver was trapped, pinned between the steering wheel, the seat, and her legs crushed under the dash. Needless to say, my partner and I listened to the woman scream for about 3 or 4 minutes till she died, brunt to death by the fire in her car. The only person I blame is the ****** who decided he needed to drive home drunk, and the poeple who didn't stop him.

I have NEVER driven drunk. I have driven after drinking, but I MAKE SURE not to drive after more then 2 drinks, unless I have waited 3 or 4 hours after the last drink.

People who drink and drive do so because they think nothing will happen. They also think they are invincible, and truth is, because alcohol impairs their judgement. After several successfull drives home, the idea that they drive better when drunk, or nothing is gonna happen because I have done it X amount of times with nothing happening, just leads them to be braver and more daring. Eventually, it catches up to them. Hopefully with some flashing light behind them, but often times, when they kill someone.

People drive drunk for the same reason they shouldn't be driving; They are impaired. I never drive drunk but mainly because I don't drink in public because I carry a gun and that would land me in jail for a lot longer than a simple DUI. I do have friends that do it almost constantly though because they are idiots! I often go out to bars with them and I always drive and never touch a drop of alcohol. I have to admit that the only reason I don't ever drive after drinking is a fear of going to jail, not common sense.

From the scumbags I've seen, they decide to do it before they start drinking. They take it as a challenge and a joke.

"Haha dude the other night I was so drunk I couldn't even make out the lights. It was so funny" Makes me ******* puke.
