I can think of a good reason to not but the parts for this:
    http://generatordepot.us/

If you are a redneck and/or have the parts 'laying' around (neighbors shed?) than ignore my statement.

That's awesome. I would think a 12VDC generator with a storage battery like that might be hard to find, if they make anything like that?

    nice job

I'm planning to do the same thing but DC only for powering my system at car shows

I thought you might want to know that an alternator wont make any more power after 2500 rpm so if you keep the engine at 2500 rpm you will still get max power and save a lot of gas

my setup is going to have an electric start 2 stroke pocket bike motor

I am looking for a controller that will sense when the voltage drops below 10.5v and will send a + or - pulse to a remote start unit so the generator will start by itself when it is needed

does anyone know where I can find such a device?

Well I do work on cars alot also - and a good heavy duty Battery
    Charger could cost up to a $150 - I use a 100amp alternator -
so I got a 100amp battery charger - and thats why I put the
rheostat to vary the power - I can charge up a almost dead battery
in like 10-15 min with this,

    What an awesome job.
That will cope with any power outages.

I think my motor runs at 3600rpm max - I changed the speed of
the motor all the way down till it stalled and it still puts out the
same power, guess I got the pulleys right, a 4 inch on the motor
and 2.5 inch on the alternator - At 3600rpm its running the
    alternator at 5700rpm with a 1.6 Pulley Ratio - I may try a 3
inch pulley on the motor - but you need a bigger pulley to keep the
motor from stalling - and just make sure your alternator fan is
running the same direction that it is on the car - its set up to
suck air from the back of the alternator over the electronics
inside it - and blow out the front - even with that it will still
    get real hot

here is a Pulley Ratio Calculator

I will look into that controller

I built one of these ghetto generators last year. Did you realize you also just built yourself a welding rig? If you bypass the field control regulator and connect the field coil direct to a deep cycle battery, you've got youself a nice, cheap, portable DC welding rig. Just get a "stinger" for stick welding, some 6010 rod, and yer good to go!

    Have fun!

I have been thinking about that - I was looking into
    a Zena welder

I was going to use it with a 14.5hp briggs motor from a old
    garden tractor, - Its a 150amp welder with a 100% duty cycle

I may try a home made one , I got a few old time Chrysler alternators,
I may up grade one to a 100amps and just add it to my setup -
I want to leave my regular alternator in place, this would be a
nice welder for smaller things - angle iron and stuff like that
