when this forum started there were only lcd screens that displayed the mp3 information. guys were seeing who could write the coolest prog for that. most of those guys are long gone now and it has since evolved into something much bigger. i spent hours and hours just reading the threads before i even joined and started posting questions. it was new and amazing! when i started to plan my system, mp3 in-car play was only just beginning to be talked about. so that is why the name mp3car doesn't really mean anything to a new member.

    History

The forum was initially started back in the days (c. 1998) when the only way to play MP3s was with a desktop or laptop PC. When dedicated, portable MP3 players became available, the focus shifted towards integrating these devices into a car audio system. Things changed yet again when powerful systems became small and inexpensive, with low power requirements, allowing for complete A/V and navigation systems. Things are now changing yet again as smaller, commercial, integrated devices are hitting the market. And in another year or two from now, the next big thing will be integrating (networking) all this together with the automobile's ECU and CAN bus.

The name "mp3car" is largely an anachronism, and has been so for quite some time now.

I guess the one thing I forgot to mention, the one thing that has remained constant throughout the years, is the homebrew nature of the board -- where you build what you want, not what somebody else wants.

Aint nuthin' wrong with a system that just plays music. In fact, although my system does a lot of other stuff, I just don't really use it. I've got a GPS and digital maps, but I'll take printed maps any day of the week. Just about all I really want my PC for is (1) so I can design an music interface that doesn't suck and (2) use an 8-channel sound card so I can DSP (EQ+full digital active crossover and time delay) on every individual speaker so I re-tune the model on-the-fly depending on passenger location and window conditions.

Have you ever heard of audiophiles anonymous? They can help you.

Hardly. Most true audiophiles gack at any audio processing, especially digital audio processing. But when you've already bastardized your source by compressing it to MP3 (audiophiles gack at the raw 16-bit 44.1 kHz digital stream to begin with), are playing it back in the accoustical nightmare of an automobile, and you already have a PC with scads of free cpu cycles, it just seems to me to be a no-brainer to put them to use.
