Right. Well the original thread is about how shocking it is that there is no ground radar tracking at airports and how that should be an easy thing to engineer.
Of course you can come up with a solution to this problem. I think what I am trying (and failing) to get across is the fact that these are operational systems and as such, have to be both highly reliable and be able to be relied upon for accuracy routinely. You simply can't afford to drop the Wifi connection at SFO in the fog and let a plane stray into the path of a landing aircraft.
And really, think about it. Would you trust a Windows box to fly a plane you were a passenger in? How about to drive a car you were a passenger in? Of course not. You'd need something far more robust and fault tolerant, which is why aircraft electronics have to survive lightning strikes. It's a completely different level of engineering.
