The problem is society in general doesn't give a flying whatever to any one or thing outside their own back yard, NIMBY I think the term used to be. (Not In My Back Yard).
I understand that some posters above have indicated they would respond positively, but what if the guy turned nasty? Would anyone else help you?

Now this is just my opinion, but first I have a question for you.
It's your car that is being broken into. You know the one that you have spent 18 month sticking a slick carputer install into, Scouse you are excused from that bit. What would you want someone to do if they were walking past and saw someone breaking into / damaging your car?
Now it's a bit different isn't it?
OK I give my answers to this question.
1. I would not want anyone to put their life on the line for a mere car.
2. I would however not want them to totally ignore it.
Those are my only criteria.
therefore i would like/expect them to, if they have access to a phone, make a phone call to the Police when they are in a position not to be observed by the person breaking in (or accomplices).
And basically that is exactly what I would do should I see such an event happening.
Now to address the question of the follow up. If the police want me to be a witness to the crime and go to court, then that is something else, they can go fish. Sure they may know who's phone it is but they have no way of knowing it was me, could have been anyone with my phone. (however I do have an extra Pay as You go phone with no link to me. And that would be the one I use
and yes I know they could probably get the companies to track down the whereabouts of it, but then we go back to stage one of prove it was me making the call.

Why would you need to go to trial? If the police catch the dude then he is either still messing with or already stolen the car which means they don't need anymore witnesses. I know this for a fact because I watched someone break into my neighbor's house and called the cops. They showed up, arrested them and they were convicted without anyone so much as asking for my testimony.
