Anybody know how to clean up sound files?

So....I got this message on my phone and there's a conversation in the background I want to hear.

This actually happens to me a lot. My name is alphabetically near (or at) the top of everyone's phone list. Consequently I get lots of calls from people who forget to lock their keypad because once in their purse/pocket/backpack the Phonebook button gets hit, then Send gets hit. So sometimes if I don't answer my phone I get these 4 minute snippets of conversation because my voicemail picks up and records the ambient noise.

Well, tonight I got one of these messages from someone we'll call "Crazy *****." Now, Crazy ***** is sort of, well, a crazy ***** for lack of a better term. The last time we talked I told her I wasnt going to put up with her ****, and she told me I needed to "just deal with it" and that I should call her when I "get some maturity."

Then she egged my car the next night....dat crazy *****!

Anyway, Crazy *****, being crazy and all, is about to take a friend of mine to court for....wait for it....slamming her car door. So there's like this 1 in 800,000 chance she's talking about something important while her phone called my voicemail, but I just can't hear it too well because of all the ambient noise.

Who can help a brutha out?

    Thats a .....crazy *****

I know there is free software on sourcefordge or whatever it is that isolates the frequency so you can listen to it and then add other frequency to get the whole picture.

I don't know what its called i can't remember use to use it quite awhile ago it works ok but will work for your purpose

Try playing it in Sasami2k media player (i love this thing) and use the audio filters it has a voice removal which usually removed the actual background noise

Try it in that and see if u can hear it with the audio filters if it doesn't work then post here for us to try

most audio editing applications let you select a sample of background noise and eliminate that frequen(y)(ies) for the whole track. I'm specifically thinking of like adobe audition aka sytrillium Cool Edit Pro.

edit:: I found a flash tutorial for it using Cool Edit/Audition. PM me if you want me to email it to you.

You could try the demo of DC Live Forensics, it's limited in quite a few ways though as it's a demo...
