I was looking into that a year ago - I was planing on calling my computer (which was in the trunk) from the front seat so I could turn it on and off. OKAY OKAY....I KNOW, why not just wire the power switch upfront - It sounded like a cool idea.

Anyway, I ran into a few hardware mechanisms while searching google.com - They would plug into your phone line and then connect that to a serial port. From there it would tell your computer what to do based upon what you dialed (one for shutdown, two for reboot, etc). Thought it was a pretty cool thing except I needed 2 cell phones as well as $350 for the unit. They were mainly for large company servers that would crash and need to be rebooted.

Im sure there is some software out there, but even though it is fairly simplistic, i doubt its cheap. But search around for a bit. I think i was searching google with the phrase "computer remote shutdown restart" But that was a year ago and I wasnt looking for software.

    Cool

If you're into programming, it could be done in VB with the MS Speech SDK without too much trouble.

I found a program called ring catcher that seems to be what I want. Just call let it ring once and hang up....then the computer detects that that you have called and runs a program.

Reason I wanted this is so I can run remote tracking of my car using a GPS+ tinytrak + cellphone in the car....

If i want to track my car I call home, let it ring once and hang up. My PC would call my cellphone in the car and start receiving GPS data about it's location and plot on a map. Eventuallly I will setup a web server with a password so I can see the data on my webpage.

I was able to assemble the Tinytrak inside my randmcnally GPS and the tracking works like a charm.......

ANyone know of a simple DOS or winddows based dialer? WinMe's dialer timeouts after 2 minutes and hangs up. I need a phone # dialer that will let the computer make a call and set the time to about 5 minutes or so and then hang up automatically... anyone?

whoa that sounds complicated, but if you can do that the possibilities are endless!

go install the software at ya friends house, then call him let his computer do the dialing and rack up his phone bill lol
