    Question car speaker ohms?

ok im new to the whole speaker install. the speakers i want are "4 OHM RATED" and my amp can put out 4 ohms, but the wattage is puny. it is much better at 2 ohms (50x4 compaired to 35x4). will the speakers work ok if i put it to 2 ohms?

to operate your amp at 2ohms you have to wire 2 4ohm speakers in Paralell

or if your amp can do bridged you can also bridge the ouptuts of your 4chann to 2chann. So let's say it's 35X4 @ 4ohm, bridged, it might be 70Wx2@4ohm.
Usually most amps say you can only do bridged mono but it's bull... all you have to do to get bridged stereo output is use y splitters and attach your Left line level input from your deck to the FRONT L and R on your amp, and your right to the amp's REAR L and R. Just go to radioshack and buy a couple of RCA Y splitters.

The advantages is that you are using full power from all channels of your amp and I belive you can get higher output doing that way than running it in parallel. I haven't quite figured out the math yet on that...but that's what I plan to do with my 4chn amp.

If its 35w x 4 RMS that's still quite a bit of power for front and rears unless you want it like SUPER loud.

Is the power rating that manufacturers say for example 35X4 into 4ohm (0.08%THD)...is that RMS?? Sometimes they would also give peak output but I rarely pay attention to that.

My front composites ( Polk EX 600) have continuous power rating of 60W@4ohm so I am stereo bridging my alpine mrp-f257 to put 70Wx2 into 4ohm. I asssume I can do that without blowing them right?

My alpine MRV-F300 will be running the rear 3-way 6X9 speakers stereo bridged also...80WX2 @4ohm.
I feel safer running my speakers at 4ohm rather than paralleling them and using 2ohm load to get higher output. This way i don't risk blowing my amp.

I have to see tonight when I get those Y splitter from ratshack and re wire the speakers... see what happens.

That'll be a loud system there moahdib.

I'm running JL audio's all around (in the cabin) and I just run them off an alpine mrv-f307, 30x4 rms amp.. although my test sheet from alpine said it was 34.5 x 4 rms.

    Gotta love alpine v12's.

In general it is safer to use an amplifier that has a higher power rating than the speakers than an underpowered amp. This is because it is easier to drive the underpowered amp into clipping. When an amplifier clips it produces high frequency harmonics which damage the tweeters. 10W of extra power is unlikely to do any damage and it can only do damage if the speakers are driven at the maximum volume for long periods.
