Poor images from scanner
About a year ago I purchased a Microtek ScanMaker 4600 flatbed scanner. Used it for about 7 months, then moved and just plugged it back in today. Now, every time I use it, it scans nothing but black. If I raise the brightness and contrast, I can sometimes get an image, but it has horrendus quality and the color is extremely red.
What's going on here?
Okay, it's possible that the light went out in it... check to make sure that it's actually illuminating the page that you're trying to scan.
maybe it got damaged in the move. if it's the bulb, I think it's possible to replace it. if it's something else, then you're probably out of luck.
Another option, would be to DL and install the latest drivers for it. it's possible (but not too likely) that the color settings got messed up, and a nice clean install of the scanning sofware would set it back ot normal.
The cord maybe could have been damaged too.
The bulb is still illuminating... But I've heard those things get dimmer with age. I've tried the latest drivers (as well as the old ones). It seems unlikely that the usb cable was damaged, but I have a spare around here that I may as well try out.
When you moved it, did you lock the mechanism? If not, then it may have been damaged. Also, it could very well be the bulb is dim from disuse. Replacing the bulbs on cheap scanners is not usually possible, but I don't know anything about the Microtek units.
It was locked during transport, so I don't think (knock on wood) it's damaged. Either way, I found some bulbs for other versions of this scanner for $10 bucks, so I'll probably just order a new one. There are instructions on Microtek's website for replacing them.
PS> It just sucks not having a scanner handy when doing taxes and buying a new home. So many papers, so little time to run to the corner gas station to make copies...

You can get a new scanner for free (minus tax)
You pay $80.00 upfront, then get it back in about 2 weeks. I've never had a problem with a staples rebate, specialy when I do it online first.
