I'm new to this forum but I've got to give my congrats! You sound like a genuine car audio / mobile entertainment enthusiast. I just spent a few minutes looking over your car and I love every aspect of it.

I chuckled when I saw your doors...

I have been doing this since my first install back in 97 when I had to cut off the plastic ring around the inside of the door panel to install a set of 6.5" speakers in a 6x8 opening. I came up with the idea on my own and have shared it with a few people over the years but this is the first time I've seen anyone else, an award winning competitor no less, doing the same thing.

PS, look for a photo of my Blue Mazda Protege5 in the April issue of Road & Track. I won an essay contest about buying car audio gear on eBay. There will be a full page ad about my story and others like me who buy equipment on eBay. It's not a full feature but I'm still excited about it.

    yeah, ya like that!? hahaha

it's not pretty by any means, but it gets the jobs done.

It will be changed in the near future though, since we will be building kicks for those berylliums so we can do them justice!

Congrats on your spot in R&T!

I'll have to pick up a copy of it and check it out.

Life is full of short cuts...but I too will be taking the long route soon. Instead of turning to eBay for my latest purchase I decided to splurge on a DLS A5 3-channel amp and a set of DLS Iridium 6.3s. In one fowl swoop I surpassed the total cost of my last system. Needless to say these will need a custom install. I'm going to start with kickpanels for the dome midranges and then work up to modifying the doors. I'll still use some of the old equipment but after one of my eBay-special MTX amps had a meltdown and fried my subs, I decided that I needed a quality amplifier to continue my hobby. The speakers were a last minute addition to my purchase when one of my tweeters bit the dust and I couldn't find a replacement. I asked how much they were and couldn't resist.

    it's not hard to do...

check out the price of the Beryllium stuff

different people have different things that they splurge on, my mom spends it on her house, and can't understand why I spend it on my car...some people spend it going out and drinking the night away, we don't do that...everyone has something.

If you make it to finals, chances are we'll see each other, but with you being in Massachusetts....I doubt it otherwise...lol

eBay is the debbil (PayPal is the spawn of satan)

Sure, ya might save some money, but the hasles, the chances, not knowing if the product is any good, etc. Just not worth it IMO. But again, I spend my money on my car and my motorcycle, not much anywhere else...lol

I doubt you'll see me at finals...at least you won't see my car there. I have never competed. I would like to but there just aren't any competitions up here in New England. I think there may be one or two SLAPshows in the area but there isn't a single SQ IASCA or USACi event scheduled.

I know that if there isn't an IASCA show withing something like 300 miles of you you can appeal to be allowed to compete at finals without ever having gone to a show. I'm sure USACi has a rule that's similar...might be worth checking out!

Interesting. I'll keep that in mind and see how I do with the SLAPshow events.
