I would buy the Nikon, you know they make quality products and they been making camera for a long time.

If you can spend a little more money I would suggest the Nikon D50.

Get the Olympus SP 500 UZ. I have 2 of the UZ series and they take fantasic pictures. It is a little bigger than the 2 you have listed here but has gotten great reviews. It also in the same price range. You can't argue with 10X optical zoom compared with 3X for both of the ones you have listed. Comes in very handy for those far away shots. Another feature I love about the Olympus cameras is that they use AA batteries so you can get spares in an emergency.

I have a canon A95 (about a year or so old now), but I liked mine so much, that I bought one for the woman...So I'd go w/ a Canon.

Got one of both, both quality products.

My sister (who is a photographer) has just bought a Panasonic lumix (dfx 9 or something) and is thrilled with it, so that's an option too.

    head over to steves-digicams
    and read some more reviews

I ended up getting the HP PhotoSmart R707 -

    - Yea I know some of there cams are lame -

I also had a HP PhotoSmart 315 before that - that cam
was also very good - almost indestructible - just died after
5 or 6 years of heavy use - gave it to a friend - and they
    killed it

Plan to buy another HP PhotoSmart 315 as a cam to keep in my
    glove box
