My car totalled from hail damage!

Well, my 2003 Kia Optima was deemed to be a total loss by State Farm Insurance due to the extensive hail damage it sustained on April 7th. Unfortunately, the whole deal with insurance happened so fast that I didn't have time to get pictures.

There were huge dents every 2-3 inches from bumper to bumper. Every piece of chrome was beat up. One OEM vent-visor was busted on the rear driver-side door. The preliminary esimate to fix it was ~$7000. The blue book was $9900. I still owed $11,500. Thank goodness my wife talked me into getting the gap insurance when I bought it.

The car tripped over 100K miles the day before the hail damage, therefore the warranty had been expired for about 20 hours before the storm.

Literally thousands of cars got trashed at the Saturn plant (where I was when this hit), both in the parking lot, and newly built cars. The smallest hailstones I saw were the size of a 2-liter bottle top, and the largest were bigger than golf balls. These rained down for about 25-30 minutes, and covered the ground about 2-3 inches deep like gravel.

Amazingly, as far as I know, no one there lost any glass in their vehicles.

So anyway, my wife and I just got home from buying a loaded 2003 Impala LS. It looks like it has a terrific place for a carputer (I passed up 9 other vehicles for "less than desirable carputer placement ability"). I'll just have to find time to install it in the dash/console.

Isn't it amazing how this hobby changes your perspective! I get in friends cars now and the first thing I look at is the dash configuration and whether it would be conducive to a carPC or not.

Wow, that's CRAZY. I remember back at summer camp years ago, it started hailing so the guys in our bunk did the logical thing: we ran outside. Fun. A few welts, no total losses.

That happend to my dad - back in the early 1990s
there was a hail storm so bad it ripped all the leaves off
the trees - broke windows, all the cars were trashed

My dad just got a brand new car - 3 weeks before
    - after a few years all the smaller dents went away

but the car still looked like a golfball
