I saw a mobile, wireless internet server years ago... the size of a small book of matches... Grad student at MIT made it.

I would not pay more than $100 - but I do want one
Heck I just got a 400mhz pocket pc for $60 on ebay
and I find good PDAs on there all the time around $50
I guess what I am trying to say - is why pay lots for that
when I could get a PDA or laptop for less - if size is a limit
a PDA should work - some PDAs have network and USB
even serial ports - heck you can even turn a PDA into a small
webserver
i think its pretty damn cool for some imbedded project. One thing that comes to mind would be a car/house alarm. In the car alarm scenario, I doubt these things take much power, i'd go for the gum stick one. The other one would be cool for simple stuff, like interfacing your ecu, collecting weather data.... stuff that requires it to be extremely portable.

Do they have enough I/O for something like that?
Gumstix are awesome little computers, the only downfall is right now they dont have a USB Host controller so you have to use a CF USB Host, but the next rendition will (hopefully soon), and they come with lots of little expansion boards with lots of outputs.
BUT, if I was going to have my choice, I would pick the CM-X270 from CompuLab, with the SB-X270 PC/104+ expansion board.

Its only 520MHz, but thats enough for me, especially with all that expansion, I could do tons of cool stuff with that, and the Siemens MC75 GSM Module, I could have a pretty sweet mobile computer too. Ahh Dreams, someday I will own it, or maybe the next version with the XScale 290 which is 624MHz.
