in general i'd say overclocking is not worth it. do you really need a 4 ghz processor to play a game?....no buy a faster video card.....and overclock that.
After alot of reading and price checking, I am seriously considering the purchase of an Intel Pentuim D 805 Chip and supporting motherboard (either Asus or Gigabyte), Ram, Power supply, etc to use for my home computer. I've decided that I want a little more oompf for my games and I plan to start doing some video editing too. According to a Tom's Hardware article i found (http://www.tomshardware.com/2006/05/..._41_ghz_cores/), the Pentium D 805 is overclockable to a whopping 4.1 GHZ, with the right mobo, ram, power supply, etc.
Now, being a PC tech, i'm well aware of what happens when CPU's aren't cooled properly, or when hardware is seriously pushed past it's limits, and when components fail, which makes me rather cautious in a purchace possibilty such as this. I don't think i'd really trust it much past 3.4GHZ, but I'll prolly want to try it a bit higher. I am confident that the chip will run at it's advertised 2.66 GHZ, and probably better than my 478 pin single core 3.06GHZ, but i would like to for once get more for my money (or lack of) when it comes to something computer related.
What are people's opinions on overclocking in general, and opinions on the findings of the Toms Hardware article would be appreciated as well. The other thing i need to know is how reliable is an OC'd setup for daily use? My girlfriend is going to need to use this computer as well, and since she'll be paying for part of it, if it's not working/reliable, well, i'll be spending alot of time in the doghouse![]()

My work log
I've got my desktop machine OCed. I like to get all the juice I can for my money when coding. I figure that I'll probably end up upgrading my CPU before I have any problems anyways.
P.S. Please keep the non-car computer posts out of the main area.

my home PC has been overclocked for about 3 years now. no issues. it a 1.2G duron OC'd to 1.9G. Not a huge OC, but one that works for me.
as for a carpc.. OC'ing tends to build more heat, so I would be hesitant to do that.
Yea, it definately won't be used for a carpc, nor will I be OC'n it to 4GHZ either. I'm looking for reliability and performance on a budget![]()
My Home PC, a 2600+ Athlon XP has been has been running 2.2GHz (3200+ territorry) for about 2 years now...
No problems here....
Peace,

I used to be big in the "overclocking scene". Good ****. Looks like tomshardware got it running stable, shouldn't be a problem, go ahead and do it, you shouldn't run into any problems and for that change you get a effing fast cpu.

Only thing i can say is keep an eye on tempratures, P4 processors can create alot of heat, and if they create to much they shut off = unstable but keeping them cool with a zalman heatsink/fan works great my comp is overclocked along with my video card also! Are you still planning on this rig? or have you built it? i know i'm two months late but, i've done worked on OC'ed machines for 3 years, and built them all
