    I have a job!

I just got a job. At a local Cinema, I am an usher.
I did have a job lined up at a theme park about 30 miles away (for you cinci's, Kings Island), but they only wanted to pay 6$, the same I am going to make as an usher, and its a 40 minute commute, to long for me. So, I applied at the theatre last night, and came back from an interview an hour ago. Its Crap pay (6$), but it'll be fun, and hopefully if I work my *** off, I'll get some raises. I would like to save up, and be able to put a few hundred down on a new car, so I don't have to drive my s-10 (the s is for ****) to school next year. I would like a Isuzu Rodeo, but thats not till this summer.
I do have an application in at a Staples, and I am supposed to call the manager back tommorow, but unless they offer me more than 50 cents more an hour, I will probably turn them down, cause its a 20 minute or so drive away, and I would have to have the extra 4$ a day that would bring in just to pay for gas, and I wouldn't have as many opportunities for advancement as I do at the theatre. Within 6 months I can become an usher supervisor.
At the Staples, I'd just be a crap stock boy for the next 2 years, and if I ask for any raises, they'd just fire me and get someone for the same price.

What Cinema? I've been job hunting myself since being an independent web designer isn't working out very well. It is a pain in the butt trying to find something in my field in Cincy. So you going to hook me up with some free tickets now?

Hell no I'm not gonna settle, hopefully I'll get a job at that Staples. If not, in about a month and a half at the beginning of summer, I will try everywhere again. I don't care If I get them mad for changing jobs so quickly, If they don't want to pay me good, I'll go somewhere where I can.

That's sort of scary to hear. Maybe it's why I stopped working on my BSCS a few years back. I just took up sales when I smelled the failure of the dot.com. Guys, never settle. Always find a job you like, if not, hire yourself.

Screw Monster and all those sites. I got my first job out of college in 2000 through Monster just by posting, without any searching, and it was great. I had 2-3 HR people calling me every week for months. When I tried again a couple months ago I couldn't even get an interview. Not nearly as many positions and a lot of unemployed people sitting at their computer spamming the hell out of any HR person who posts there.

However, I found that finding work was cake if you ignore the "easy" sites and start looking at company sites and talking to people you know. I got 3 solid interviews in a week just by dropping resumes with friends and family. My commute went from an hour each way to 3 minutes each way and the benefits/salary are comparable to my dot-com job. I go home for lunch every day and I can ride my motorcycle to work without caring if it looks like rain.

If I had know how easy it was to get a "real" job when I was a teenager I would have told Service Merchandise and CompUSA to collectively shove their sales jobs in a small, dark place. If you have any computer skills (i.e. you're reading this post) go find a computer job. If you have to lie, do it. Worst thing that can hgappen is you get a few weeks pay before they can you. Better, you'll most likely gain the skills in a short time. It looks better on your resume later. On top of that, if you're in school, forget worrying about your GPA (nobody has ever asked me, ever) and get a part-time/internship/co-op. I learned more in 6 months about programming on the job than I did in far too many years of school at U. of Maryland. Don't misconstrue that to mean the degree isn't important, but HR likes experience. The degree is just a formality.

Rant finished... I feel much better.

I agree...my co-op in the IT dept. at a CP&L nuclear power plant and my job at the local ISP writing Perl scripts for slightly more than minimum wage opened up far more doors than my GPA. The only reason I'd bother with a high GPA in computer sci. or IS is if you are going into grad school and want to get an assistantship or something like that.

Yes, this may not be good for your morals but its definately good for your bank account.

    LIE on RESUMES.

    Quick story:
Friend of mind goes for a job interview for a dot com and states he has 5 years experience in Flash (hes has maybe 2) got the job on the spot picked up what he needed to know on the job and now is head Flash Designer making $80,000. All this and he's only 20 years old. I told the truth and am stuck here doing web design making half what he does.

    Again: LIE on RESUMES!
