Does the BIOS see the harddrive?
alright guys im posting this for a bud of mine, hope ya can help out
"Friend called me up with an interesting question. His desktop PC randomly stopped working! I went to talk a look at it and I have no solution. When it boots up, it stays at the Abit motherboard logo. When I press tab to see POST, it just has the memory running up. After good while, it tries to boot up. There it stops at "Update Succesful" where it says that before the XP logo normally comes up.
I cleared CMOS and it does the same thing.
When I try to repair with my XP disks, it says it cannot find a harddrive.
Is my HD dead?
Thanks!
Matt"

him: I am just trying to reformat now. When I change the boot sequence, and reboot to get to the xp setup screen, it asks to repair or continue installation and if i choose either it tell me setup must be exited because no hard drive was found.
Whats the other way I can go about reformatting?

response: bad data cluster or maybe the registry got messed with...

response: take the non-working hard drive and hook it up to another computer as a slave drive if you have another computer and format it in windows

him: Stuck a brand new maxtor 200gb HD to it and it did the same darn thing!
IDE or SATA? You will need to install drivers for XP install to see a SATA controller or IDE RAID controller. (Press F6 to install drivers)
Can you hear the HD spin up? Any other sounds, clicking?

Well obviously the hd isn't recognized in the BIOS, or else he wouldn't have that problem. Is this a common IDE or a SATA150 or a SATAII?
Try a different cable. Try a different IDE header on the mobo. Flip the cable upsidedown. Double check the power cable.
