Last week i changed my head unit (again (ironically figuring it would be the last one that i put in this car)) and this week it, an equalizer and a video monitor have been stolen from my car..... but, here is the kicker, they were stolen at the dealership
i took my car in for service (to have the alt. looked at cause it is still under warrantee)... they kept the car overnight, and returned it to me missing my new head unit (minus the faceplate which i carry with me in poor hopes of detering theft
(who knew that they would steal the thing without the faceplate) screen, and one equalizer) it was really funny when they drove my car out to me with the big gaping hole, handed me the keys and walked away as if i would not notice i am missing a stereo... the dealership then proceeded to try feeding me crap about them not being responsible... at which point a did a fair amount of yelling, so now the police reports are in and i shall see how it goes from there.......
Sucks, but it is true. Most (If not all) dealerships have a sign posted that removes "the dealership" from responsibility. Whenever I leave my car at the dealership I remove any that I don't want stolen. Check your auto insurance, it might cover your losses. Whatever isn't covered by that maybe covered under your renters/home insurance.

You do realise that in the eyes of the law, a sign is not a binding contract....The dealer is responsible for your loss. They should have locked the car in the garage or storage for the night...Do you know any lawyer friends? Have them call the dealer and explain why they should pay for your new stereo...

Aaron- it depends on your locality. In the US (in general) that is generally true, a sign is not a binding contract. However, in most states, california for example - adequately posted warning signs -do- remove liability for neglegence. The dealer can't be held directly responsible for the theft anyways, so you would have to claim that they were neglegent in the care of your car while in their hands.Originally posted by Aaron Cake

To top that off, every mechanic I've ever seen has a legal disclaimer and release of liability on the bottom of their quote sheets and require you to sign it before turning in your car. =(
Call your insurance, Call your renter's/home owner's policy, and if both of those fail, then go get a lawyer.
