Slowing down is only one part of the equation. Sure, slowing down is helpful, but you also need to pay attention, use your turn signals, get off the damn cellphone (or at least get a handsfree setup), turn down the stereo, teach your kids to behave in the car, and so on.
I drive quickly, although not blazingly fast. 75 on the freeway is my nominal speed. But I'm also paying attention, watching in my rearview mirror, and so on. I'm also not cruising 75 in the rain or snow. My daughter understands that I can't look at the picture in her book or the screen of her Tamagotchi while I'm driving, as well.
While we're ont he subject of dumb-as-**** drivers....
What's with people hitting their brakes on the freeway for no apparent reason? There are very few times I touch my brakes on the freeway (heavy rush-hour traffic being an exception). People seem that the car has two modes: accelerate as hard as possible or stop as quickly as possible. 99% of the time, I can slow down to prevent rear-ending the guy in front of me by
taking my foot off the gas. Is that such a difficult concept to comprehend?
Maybe i'm just old and bitter.
