anyone interested in astronomy?? step in my friends ... pics of my latest toy

as if I didn't have better uses for my money *coucarpcghh*

so I've always wanted a telescope ... always been interested in astronomy and every summer goes by without me actuallly doing anything about it. With such nice weather during the summer, it's cool to spend a night just chilling outside and trying to catch a view of the night sky.

I was really inspired 2 summers ago when I went camping about 30 minutes south of my place ... it was up on a mountain too. The night sky was spectacular ... you could really see the milky way and "shooting stars" all over.

So I did my hw, got some advice from my astro professor who happend to do research at nearby NASA and went ahead and bought this beast.

It's an 8" Dobsonian (reflector telescope). The reason they call it a dobsonian is because of it's base .. it's not the standard tripod that one would imagine when you first think of a telescope (they call it equatorial mount).

The dobsonian is also the best bang for the buck. I basically went out and bought the biggest one that would fit in my car lol. It takes up the entire back seat (just the tube) and the mount fits in the front or in my trunk (thank god for spacious maximas!).

I also wanted to take some noob astrophotography ... I have a 4mp canon powershot which I bought a telescope mount for. I connect the camera to the telescope eyepiece and remotely control all of the camera's functions to my laptop which also has Starry Night Pro running (professional astronomy software).

It's pretty hightech ... i'll try to take pics of the setup.

Here are pics of my scope:

Here are pics of jupiter I was able to capture ... obviously, they look alot better with the naked eye in the eyepiece. I coudln't capture a more magnified image because by the time I could setup the camera to the eyepiece, jupiter would move out of view.

can you see the color/stripes? I captured these from my front driveway .. im lucky to be away from alot of the light pollution.

shutter opened up a bit longer to capture 4 of jupiter's most visible moons (Io, Ganymede, Callipso, Europa)

oh btw, the whole telescope setup (without much accessories for it yet) has run me close to $500.

I've done alot of research before I bought this ... i'd be happy to field any questions if anyone is interested.

That's pretty cool.. Wish I had your budget. For years i've wished for a telescope like that that I could hookup to the pc and use software to track moons etc with some kind of motorized base. The one you've got looks nice but I long for a digital one that I can hook up to my pc or maybe even my digital SLR camera.

Keep up the good work and post up some more pictures.
