wow...talk about bringing back from the dead!!!

the fact of the matter will be that if the cop pulls you over and it is night time he has already seen the screen most likely so you are already caught having it on.

i put my LCD in the center console, where my head unit was, custom made everything blah blah... and my father (ex cop) said that if i had a crash, id get no insurance due to it was easy to see its a "TV"
and since i need to have insurance i moved it outa site

so i put mine in the clove box thingy, only just fits too

but the thing that i wona know is how come those OLE head units are ok to have in the car, i lookd at my mates one all the time when i was driving round.. i guess the insurance companys have some "size" issue with displays?

I'm not sure of the laws in New Zealand but find out the law and read it carefully. There is most likely a loopole that will allow for your setup. Never ask the police or any goverment agency as they will never give you unbiased info. As for the info they gave you, there is already a possible loophole. Of course, your computer has the ability to play video files and the factory gps has the ability to be interfaced to play any video source. This does not mean that your setup as configured can play the video files. Simply removing/modifying software/hardware will take away your abilty to play these files. It would be very hard for any law to make a distinction between the ability for your computer to play video files and the ability to do the same thing on a factory gps(some of which are now linux based- read actually pc's). The distinction is likely to come down to the ability as configured and this is where you can slide by....

P.S. there are very few reasons besides fraud that an insurance company has the right not to pay(at least in U.S). You can get numerous violations( one of which could be driving while watching video) and the insurance must still pay out.

I really dont like this lwas about getting distracted, cus you see people driving and with their gf kissing, shouldnt be a law against that too? or people that talk a lot in their cars with other people completely not paying attention to the road, I mean yea its a PC and yea you can watch dvd and what not but if you are not watching it then you shouldnt be condemned by it. Another thing you can do is remove all the video files you have out of the PC and have them storage in DVDs and when you have stop then watch them, but not while driving. The insurance would have to prove that you where watching a video or so, and if you where well you will learn your lesson.
