    iPod DOWN!!!!

So my iPod's HD has got to be shot, it's a 4th gen click wheel with the black and white screen. All I hear when I try to boot it is some clicking comming from inside, a sad iPod icon comes up and thats it. I've tried fully charging, reseting, and I can't get it to recognize on ANY computer (I've tried half a dozen so far.). Anyone know how to homebrew hack one of these things to make it work again. I could send it to apple, but for the price of the repair I could get a new iPod though my school.

Yes. Smack the iPod upside the head...
If you think I'm joking, you really haven't much to lose. So listen up.
If you're scared to do so, just let it drop on its side 3" on the table or 2" on the floor.

What you're hearing is stuck platters in the HD. Gravity does wonders!

I've had similiar issues. yes, a smack has been known to fix it, just like your old TV. Also, if you can open it up correctly (without marring anything) then you can disconnect the battery, since that's the only TRUE hard reset.

My 4th gen started doing this. I took it apart, disconnected the HD cable (and probably some other cables). I then put it back together and it started working again. It's worth a shot, and if you have a flat razor blade, it's really easy to open.

well if the smack doesn't work, then i'll open it up. I don't have a razor blade...but i've got a butterfly knife and a switch blade here that may work :P

No, I'm not kidding (though I was more skeptical than you when I first saw the "dead iPod smiley").

I suggest you hit it on its side, that way the head will skip the platter instead of hitting it.

Never use those stuff unless you want it looking like its been chewed by a dog.

Anything that need opening up like a TV remote that uses those all round clip to hold the case together or something similiar...

Use an old credit card plastic, using the corner of the plastic then gently slide it around as you turn the card to use its side. This way you are using the full side of the card keeping the case clip popped up as you slide around.

I use this trick all the time, the soft plastic card never damage the case.

The top needs to come out first, because the docking port will get damaged if you try to pull the top off evenly.
