Sounds like you have a bad valve in your evaporative emissions control system...I'd grab a shop manual for the car, locate all the valves, and test as described in the manual. Shouldn't be hard to fix.
So Im just about down to the last gallon of gas in my truck...Stop at a gast station and start to unscrew the gas cap..."PSSSHHHHHHHHH" for about 10 seconds. Air just kept spewing out for 3 more secs after removing the cap completly. It didnt smell like it was purely evaportated gas...but it just kept coming out.
It was a Code Red day here in Wash DC and it was like 90 degrees out. However, Ive had this truck for 6 years and have never had it do that to me. I used to live down in New Orleans for 2 years with the truck and in St. Louis for about 3 years total...it gets much hotter down there, but never had that problem.
Pretty much just startled the **** outa me. Never had a problem with the truck (well none that I didnt cause do to "making it better") and it still runs prefectly...anyone had this happen to them too??

Happens to my CRX whenever I get really low on gas.....the lower I get the longer and louder the sound it.

A vented cap is not the proper solution, and is downright dangerous. Fix the problem correctly.
