It's your cable. I can almost guarantee it.
Hey guys, i'm having a strange problem with my home computer.
Yesterday i bought a 40gb hdd, and installed a fresh copy of winME on it, then proceeded to set up my hardware / software. I use winroute lite as a NAT server for my local network (one other windows box and a linux box) After a boot everything works fine, and i can telnet to my linux machine and all is sweet, but then after a while, the network interface on my windows machine 'dies'.
I can't ping another machine, ftp, even windows networking, it just stops. Under the device manager its all sweet. After a reboot it works fine. Any ideas? suggestions?
I am using the drivers from the manufautrer that worked fine on my old installation. :\

All the link lights on the hub are still the same, so i dont think its the cable. But just to be sure, i replaced the cable, with both another cat 5, and also a cross-over cable (bypassing the hub all together). Still no go, after about 30 mins, the ethernet interface dies.
.:Edit:.
I have updated the network card drivers with the latest off the web.
Also when trying to ping from the machine in question, no activity lights on the hub flash, but if i ping from another computer, there is activity at the hub.
HELP!

try a different PCI Slot?
Ive shot my self in the foot over soo many cables over the years, so its always the best thing to check first. Otherwise, drivers (which you said you updated), configs for the drivers (duplex, autodetect, etc), os/software (ahh! get it away!), hardware conflict (pci slot, irq conflict, interupt, etc) and finally the nic itself. Also, why use winroute, doesnt winme have internet conection sharing built into it (i dont remember, i've tried to avoid it
.

What kind of power supply you runnin?
Believe it or not, my old crappy power supply caused all kinds of whacky problems on my old computer![]()
I had this problem a few months about when I was setting up a web server. Couldn't figure it out for the life of me. The lights were lit on the card, but the connection kept dying. Ended up being the cable. Are the cables you're using homemade or did you buy them?
Thanks for all the replys, I think i may of sorted it out.
I uninstalled winroute lite, uninstalled the network card driver, changed the slot, and rebooted, and reinstalled the network drivers. So far so good (touch wood). I haven't been activly using the interface, but its still working after being up all night. So i'll see how it goes, if all good, i may try installing winroute lite.
As for internet connection sharing built-in to windows, i dont believe it allows sharing with non-windows based OS's (i'm running a linux box on my network.)
again, thanks. and lets hope it keeps working![]()

It just struck me, but how does winroute only work with one nic? If you have two nics, ICS works with any os, one internal network nic that becomes the gateway, and the external nic to the cable/dsl modem.

I'm not blessed enough to have dsl/cable. so I'm limited to dialup. so my modem is basically my 2nd nic. So ICS works with any OS? I might look into that.
