    Question Rice-Hondas worthless?

Now, we all know that rice Hondas are actually worthless, but reading the "removing paint sucks" thread made me think of something else.

What happens in 5 years when all the owners try to sell their mutilated rides? Hopefully, by that time the rice trend will have disappeared...Seems to me that there will be a lot of cars heading directly to the scrap yard, as it will most likely be uneconomical to stip that nasty body kit, replace "JDM" parts with the correct unit, and bring the interior back to stock....

    Just a thought.

I have to agree with you on that. It seems like each day that goes by, these guys just keep taking it to the next limit. Just the other day i saw a honda civic with tripple wings.

It could just be me, but i dont see the trend going away any time soon, and what happens now when someone gets rid of their "rice"? do they just sell it to someone who wants such a creation? And heh, just struck me as amusing, but 1932 posts vs 1392 at this moment.

selling a used car to a scrap yard for $50 is going to be there punishment for spending un-godly ammounts of money making their cars look ugly and unoriginal, and making themselves look like clowns for trying to make economy cars into race cars.

just my $.02 since i usually fuc|< around and race all the honda guys by my house... and usually win.

I just wish all the ricers would stop bothering me at intersections. They have such little knowledge that they don't understand that after I rev, and they hear that "hissssssss....swoosh" of the turbo and BOV, it means they will loose. Sigh.

Heh, and thats my idea of a dream car. Turning my Passat into a nice sleeper of a car, now if only i had a few thousand just burning a hole in my pocket, id be all set. And I admit, I'd have to do a bit of body work, but that would be to further clean up the lines (eurolook), and not add more lines (3 tier wing ). Then again, my passat pulls well for being a 9 year old sedan, tho a supercharged 350hp synchro monster would be all the more fun .

Ah, I seem to disagree with most of you. While I think many of the "ricing" practices make the cars look ridiculous and lose value, on the other hand, adding a great sound system and some more electronic(pc) features make a car MORE valuable. I'd say if you had a nice LCD install in the dash with hidden wires and such, most people would love to have such an embellishment in their vehicle. Additionally things like white headlights, clear taillights, good exhaust. All of these things may make the car less valuable to the dealer, but to someone else looking for a car, it might be just what they want. Me for example, I recovered my door panels' cloth with a material similar to upholstery velvet and it matches the outside of the vehicle, adds a lot of color to the interior, and so far everyone I've talked to said it looks great. things like this can add value to your car in my opinion. I also insulated my door panels with Lowe's soundproofing insulation and rubberized coating. It isn't noticeable until you're driving down the expressway at 85 mph and all you hear is some slight windnoise from the side mirrors.

this is a bit long... sorry!!!

    supermatty...

you have relevant points about adding aftermarket equipment to better your car. new upholstery does add to the desirability of a car... no doubt about it. as does a nice stereo, or a display screen. but most people (myself included) are planning on taking their systems out when they sell a car.

the point i was (and i think aaron was) trying to make, was adding things like a giant aluminum wing, multi level wing, or a body kit, painting the interior, cutting the springs to lower it, or other similar "rice" customizations... are only going to lead to problems down the road.

the wings require you to drill holes in the trunk to provide a mounting point. your goint to have to fill and paint the repair sections from the holes or get another trunk lid... both are money spent to "normalize" your car to sell it.

body kits wouldnt be that hard to deal with, as long as you kept the original parts... but most guys sell their stuff to make up money spent on the aftermarket goodies. plus, if you do have the original parts, most likely they have been in the garage while your car has been out in the weather. the car faded and the bumpers did not. so you have mismatched bumpers (not always, but sometimes)

painting the interior... have you ever tried to remove paint from anything... it generally sucks (especially when it is a dashboard or a HVAC vent). so unless you can find someone who wants the interior painted.. you are probably going to have to buy new interior pieces....

cutting the springs... another "ricer" modification that is going to require new equipment to get your car back to normal when you sell it....

now, maybe im being a bit harsh when i list all this stuff...but to me, it does seem like a phase that is going to pass. after all, the only modified cars that seem to hang around are the true muscle cars... low powered cars that were modified generally dont live a long life... unless some sport compact enthousiast group remains popular in the coming 10-15 years, i see only bad things happening to the guys with these cars...

also, think of it this way... if you are buying a car from a guy that had it previously "riced out", what are the odds that he street raced it... pretty high i would say. that fact alone is going to result in many of these cars being passed on many times when they come up for sale.

    rant over....

    No dealer will buy mine...

Ive put too many modifications on mine that the most a dealer could offer is $8,000. "Its too hard to sell".

You right though, if you can find the right person...you could get what you are asking for. But something tells me that no one will give me he $20,000+ my car is "worth" after the bumber, winch, exhaust, suspension, and all the crap on the inside.

Im gonna drive mine for another 5-7 years, then give it to some scrawny teenager like I was (well im still scrawny, but not a teenager).

As far as ricing though...I think its fine. Id rather jack up a Tacoma or a jeep, but most kids cant afford to do much besides go to PepBoys and buy a bunch of cheap lighting accesories. If it interests them, and it keeps them busy...go for it. i dont know how much money i wasted on 4mb of ram and 540mb hard drives when I was 16. Basically, I prolly dropped as much as they did on their car as I did on comp parts. Atleast, they have something to show...Ive got a box full of worthless crap. Anyone wanna buy 4mb of ram for $100? Its really fast...hahaha!
