Bought all my OSes. DOS6.2 for the old car PC, Win98SE for home PC (then transferred to car PC when home PC replaced), WinXP Pro for the new home PC. 98Lite for car PC OS tuning.
Old Systems retired due to new car
New system at design/prototype stage on BeagleBoard.
Bought mine. Well not as a box at the shell, but it come with the computer.
Also, most softwares is dirt cheap at your university book store. The one on my carPCs are from university book store for 10 bucks a pop. The catch is you have to be a student or university staff.

I have bought 1 copy of XP Pro, and 1 copy came with my mother's Dell (Home), and I got Vista for free! (Not downloaded, M$ sent me a full copy and not beta either, although they did send me that too)

Yes I buy all the software I use, but at the same time I don't
feel to bad about using it on more than one computer, as long as
its just for me, at home, it is still stealing in a way tho, if it was
for a business, then yes, every computer would have its own, but
then again, I would use Linux

Oh and my laptop has a copy of TabletXP! So 3 official copies on 8 computers including the car... Hmmm. All personal use though and since there is only 1 me, I can't use the same "copy" simultaneously. And I think that is in the legalities of XP's TOS. You are allowed to install it on personal machines as long as only 1 copy is ever in use at 1 time. So shutdown, move to the next, ect...

The u book store at our campus has lots of stuff including Adobe photoshop.
