Missing Hard Drive Space?

My friend has a 40GB Hard Drive. He has been trying to delete a whole bunch of stuff off of it because he is running out of space.

Only problem is, now that he's cleaned out everything he can think of, he has 12GB unaccounted for. The 3 Biggest pieces of software that are on that computer are Windows XP, Office 2003 Pro, and Norton SystemWorks 2005.

All of his documents and such add up to maybe 1GB.

Are there any programs that can be used to categorize what is using how much space on the hard drive?

Kind of like:

Windows XP: 1.5GB
Office 2003: 1.5GB
Norton SystemWorks 2005: 1GB
Nero Burning Rom: 300MB
Etc: GB

Stuff like that..

what about the Add/Remove programs list and sort by file size?

There is an advanced xp powertoy thing that is basically the same thing but it doesn't show size, just everything installed. I don't think you have 12gb of hidden programs though... That is odd. Could just be really fragged. Have you tried partitioning and then deleting temporary files using the "clean up system harddrive space" button on the harddrives property panel?

go to your system tools, and clear up the temporary files, and do the same for internet explorer.

Tried all that... The first thing I told him to do was to go to Add/Remove and do by size... he says the only large things on there are Office and Norton....

We've gotten rid of all Temp and Temp Internet Files...

Still there's 12GB of Crap floating around somewhere and we can't find it...
