    Mail in Rebate, a fight for your money.

    Normally, I have very good luck with MIR. Basically, I get my money back every time with nothing but send in the barcode, on time and receipt.
    This time, it take a fight to get my money. The amount isn't worth my time, but I just hate the way the company treating its customer.

    Anyway, in May, 06 I bought a Kworld USB2.0 TV Dongle from Fry's Electronic for 45 bucks and free with 2 MIR.
    One of the rebate requires actual barcode from the box and the other just requires a copy (I am glad they stated that instead of 2 actual barcode ), rebate forms and Rebate Receipt printed out by Fry's.
    I send both in at the same time and same address (different depart #) at Kworld office in Irvine, CA.
    2 months gone by and I haven't got the rebate checks yet, so I shoot an email to kworld asking for the status. The email go unanswer. Shoot another email a month later. The 2nd email also go unanswer, and I don't know where the hell did the email go.
    After the 2nd email go unanswer, I was like 'Okay great, my 45 bucks is gone.'
    And literally, I forgot about it until Xmas 06 when I was searching for info for a ATSC PCI/USB tuner for the HTPC project. I came across serveral forums talking about how good/bad regarding to some tuner also complain about rebates.
    Serveral of the complains were about how Kworld process the rebate as Kworld does have ATSC tuner in their product line. Most of the complain was about them not doing any processing until you bugging them, and if they do, they will reject because for this reason: "Rebate receipt is not considered acceptable invoice." You can't resubmit the sale receipt if you happen to send the rebate receipt. On the rebate signature agreement that said, "Resubmission of this Rebate Request will not be process." Well, I remember I only send the rebate receipt and not a sale receipt or copy of it. Basically, what Kworld said is do it right or that's it.
    So I send Kworld another email on first week of Jan 07 asking for the status.
    While waiting for the 3rd email to answer, I came accross an article regarding to rebate and who is responsible to pay, the manufacturer or retailer. In that article a guy said that Fry's electronic will pay you if the manufacturer didn't. A few also mention the lawsuit regarding to CompUSA in California.
    So I dig up the copy of the rebate I sent and go to Fry's to see what Fry's will do about it. The CS lady said that she will resubmit the rebate for me if I have all the copy. Well, I have everything but I couldn't find the copy of the freaking barcode. She can't do it unless I have the copy of the barcode.
    I went home and said to myself "**** that 45 bucks is seem hard to get after all."
    When I got home open my email and to my suprise, kworld reply to my message with the same lame reason: "Rebate receipt is not considered acceptable invoice." Well I started to get **** so I did more search to find out what other people doing about it when they get the same lame rejection reason. Remember, Fry's electronic always printed out rebates receipt for every rebate item, and on the rebate receipt it said "Submit for rebate" and "not valid for product return/exchange .... "
    With the printout from kworld email I went to Fry's to see what they said about "sale receipt" and "rebate receipt". I gave the lady a hard time and so did she. Below is the conversation I had with her. Not exactly, but close.
    Me: What is the purpose of the rebate receipt?
    CS: You can use it to submit for rebate.
    Me: Why Kworld denied my rebate when I used rebate receipt instead of sale receipt?
    The lady look over the rebate form and said.
    CS: Well, they rejected because you didn't submit the sale receipt which stated in the rebate form.
    Me: So why did Fry give me the rebate receipt in the first place?
    CS: so you can submit it for rebate.

    You guys see that the conversation is going in cycle.
    I demanded to talk to the supervisor, she said that the sup was out for lunch or not in she didn't know. I think that the sup was sit on the desk because during the conversation, she kept going back to the lady behind the desk and ask question event when I ask for the sup name and phone number. After I got the sup phone/name, I also demand to talk to the store manager. She said that the manager was in the meeting and I have to wait for at least 30 mins. I just told her I came back, and I went home.

    Hitting google again regarding to how other people dealing with the situation I am in. Most of the people complain to BBB, FTC, Dept of Consumer Affair, state's Attorney General. Some also sending a demanding letter to kworld and has good result. Well, I came across a post on slickdeals with the following demand letter.
    Dear Kworld Rebate Center,

    Your reason to void my rebate is unacceptable. For every product I
    have purchased from Fry's Electronics with a rebate all the other
    companies have accepted the rebate receipt as a valid form of the copy
    of the sales receipt. I have attached a copy of my original sales
    receipt, but I should have not had to go through the trouble of doing
    so. It seems that your company does not take doing business with
    customers seriously. If you look up Kworld Rebate with google, you
    will find that there are no links to your company's official sites,
    but rather many forums with unhappy customers who have listed
    complaints about your ineptitude to address rebates correctly. If you
    do not fulfill your obligation bysending me two rebates each in the
    amount of $20 within 30 days, I will pursue legal actions. I would
    suggest that you try to resolve the matter, because this could very
    easily turn into a class-action law suit against your
    company judging by all the other customers who have had trouble with
    your rebate policies.
    Well, I changed the content a little to fit my situation and sent it to kworld. At the same time, I filed a complain to BBB and Dept of Consummer Affair.
    Kworld reply back to me within 5 hrs after sending the demand letter saying that they will accept resubmission of "store sale receipt as customer's satisfaction guarantee per one time courtesy." I only need to send the copy of the sale receipt and nothing else.
    Well, I send a copy of sale receipt to them with "return signature". Cost me almost 5 bucks just to send the letter within 20 miles, but I am happy to pay USPS for it.
    DCA reply to me saying that they are not handle the case and refer me to Dept of Justice's attoney general office, but they will take action if the number of complain escalate. BBB al so notified me to follow up to Kworld respondent on BBB request.
    Well, at last, I got my 45 bucks from Kworld within a week after resubmit the copy of sale receipt per kworld request.
    I wouldn't **** and going that far to get my 45 bucks if kworld reply to me and said that "well, you only have 6 months to send inquiry as indicated in the rebate form". My 3nd email was already pass 6 months.
    At least, after all this BS, I learn serveral things regarding to MIR:
    - Rebate Receipt is not always valid for rebate submission.
    - When in doubt, send both rebate receipt and copy sale receipt.
    - Read the freaking fine print on the rebate form (which I did).
    - Follow up your MIR in timely
    - Make a copy of everything you submit.
    - If you can have it, break it. I mean file complain to proper channel.

    Well, sorry for a long post. Maybe it help some of you guys out there when you do bargain shopping.

    I always aviod rebates.... if I do ever even bother to submit it, I never follow up with it... half the times I forget to even mail it in

    yeah man, I think rebates were originally started with just me in mind.... I bet maybe half of the rebates ever get done properly.... there banking on the procrastination I think...

    Tiger direct does the same thing as fry's. They will honor rebates if something goes bad like this.

    I had a problem where my receipt had an incorrect address on it and when I mailed it from the correct address it got rejected with no chance of resubmission. It was later corrected by Tiger Direct when I said I ahve no control over an address if they type it in wrong or just plain don't ask me.

    Now I try to avoid rebates at all costs. But eevery nwo and then I am tempted.

    Most of the time I try to avoid rebate, but sometime, I just have to use them and if I do, I just try to get my money.
    The only time I didn't send the MIR is when I bought a set of Silver Star bulb from pepboy. It has 5 buck MIR for the item. I bought the set dirt cheap because pepboy made a mistake on their ads that what mean for a single bulb instead of twin bulb package. I paid 19.99 instead of 29.99.

    fatwallet and slickdeals are my 2 favorite webpages...I do a lot of MIRs and get a lot of Free after MIR stuff....Just have to fill out the MIR right away, if it's not in the mailbox that day I know I will let it slip and most likely never do it. I experienced that as long as everything is filled out properly chances are 99.9999999-100% I will get the rebate, and I keep track or it.

    Like I said before, Staples, Easy Rebates are the best thing to happen to rebates.
