    Is this possible?

Ok so my friend has a Mac and i dont know much about mac's but when he tries to start the mac it cant load the HDD. So basically he needs to recover the information on the HDD. What i am asking is:

Is it possible to take the HDD out of the mac, put it in an external HDD, hook it up to my PC and retrieve the data like I would normally on a regular PC.

How would i retrieve the data on the Macs HDD?

My friend also has another mac, would i be able to take the defective hdd out of the 1st mac install it as a slave in the 2nd mac and retrieve the data?

    Whats the best possible solution?

ide to usb on another mac.

it will work on a PC but things other than jpgs and mp3s will be unuseable. It will still copy it over correctly, but no way to verify the contents.

Ok so I was able to take the HDD out of the iMac and I put it in my external HDD enclousure (ide-usb) I plug the drive in to my PC and the drive spins and windows pops up saying the drive was installed so i go to my comp to see if the drive was there but its not! In device manager under disk drives it says its there but its not list in the admin toold under disk managemet. I DL MacDrive, and TransMac and i cant access the drive...Any1 know what i can do?

Monday when i get back to school we have macs on campus, i will bring the drive in the enclosure there and see if i can read it there. But anything else i can do to try and read the drive?

What if i connect it inside my pc via IDE??

well the formatting may be incompatable. Your best bet would be get a program that just copies whatever is there to an image file and then blindly copy it all back when you get the new drive. No reading and trying to make sense. Just write data bit for bit. And write it back bit for bit on the new drive.

Linux is good for this. Actually you may be able to see the file contents under linux. Try a knoppix live CD or something and see if the data shows up. Also norton make a goot "backup" program. I think it is ghost, but I don't recall too well.
