About watching a car - I think it's unnecessary stress. when you take a car out to a restaurant, a movie, etc, the last thing I want to be worrying about it - 'I hope someone doesnt scratch my car.... I hope someone doesn't hit it/ket it, etc...' .... so I think I'm going to stay the 'economical route' and stick with some cheap cars from now on...

And cops are assholes - definitely true in NYC and possibly elsewhere ;] . If you saw someone damage your exotic, and you called the cops, the cops would most likely say 'you can get it painted - or you can get another car' etc. Cops are real pricks and get jealous when they see something exotic... I was given a ticket for double-parking (along with 20+ other cars that were double-parked) because the cop saw that I was young and had something nice... I parked my hummer on the street for a couple of nights and I had trouble sleeping. I've slept in it before too so I know no one would **** with it.... Paranoia? naw, just making sure jealous ****ers don't **** up my ****.

    i love cussin' ;]

    Like biggie says - jealousys' a mother ******. ;]

There's one European -even German, to be more specific- brand, that can match op to American cars.... The name's OPEL.... Always have been rustbuckets, but eversince GM bought it, well.... It's still the same as 30years ago
Xenia & Isabelle, totally in love!

It's not the assembly or engineering that is poor. It is the quality of the parts used in the assembly that is poor. Fit and Finish is lack luster due to flimsy hinges and thin seals around doors and trunks. NVH is a problem due to thinner materials being used for headliners, carpet and door panels. Suspension sucks due to cheap struts and shocks.

    You will.
    And sooner than you think.
You are what, 19 maybe 20 years old?
You have no clue yet as to how lagging American auto sales effect you. But you will in 5 or 10 years.
I guess the better question is what constitutes an American car. Is it something build and assembled by Americans in the US or is it being made by a company that is founded in the US but assembled in a third world county?

I think engineering has something to do with the quality. Americans probably take more compromises to cut costs, which leads to worse designed cars. For instance, I don't think any American car company would put airplane like hinges on doors of their coupes to prevent sagging and support the weight. But my Lexus has them.
Suspensions suck because of they way they were engineered. Hell, the corvette has leaf springs

I'm 19. I will be working in a sector that is unrelated to the automotive industry, so I don't see how lagging auto sales will impact me.

    So true!

You should see the interior in the C5 Vette. Its all plastic, and cheap one at that. OR how about the older mustangs (02)? I had the unpleaseant experience of sitting in the back of the mustang, and I touched the panels surrounding the side window.. they had a really oily feeing to them that made me want to wash my hands right after. Oh, or how about Saturn interiors? The frigging plastic starts expanding if its hot or contracting when its cold, making noise.

I love the Corvette but the price vs. the fact that it's gonna fall apart and it's made like crap means I'm not buying one... ever....

If American car companies are going to continue to produce crap, the price should also reflect crap and not gold. If I were to ever buy a corvette, I would beat the hell outta it and resell it asap.

The feeling of a true american muscle car is awesome... but that awesome feeling gets wiped away immediately for 2 reasons: 1) that $70,000 that you used to buy the corvette is gone and you have nothing GOOD to show for it and 2) The 18-year-old with the mitsu evo down the block can toast your ***. LOLZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

I guess I'm the oddball here, but I like American cars... I love my Cadillacs & I love the fact that most American cars are easy & inexpensive to repair & maintain....

I think if your going to buy a new car & keep it a few years & then trade to another new car, then a European car is great, I mean there so friggin over engineered it's not even funny, & when new there just amazing, but this same over engineered thing is what kills you when the car starts to approach 8 years/100k miles... that's where the maintenance & repairs start to become suicide...

also, there are good & bad in all cars, I mean there have been lemons that have not come from the USA, & even manufactures that are regarded as the best still have issues... Honda has had there tranny issues & window issues.... don't even get me started on audi's.... think Benz is great?, well check out the Benz forums & see what issues there are with the 00-03 s classes

there have been plenty of crappy cars that have come from other than the us... & the overall build quality & construction of all new cars have gone down from the past, I repair crashed cars for a living & I see the build quality & construction of most modern cars... I don't see where the American cars are much inferior to any thing else really as a whole, I mean the more you spend the more you get with a new car...

to group all American cars & say there crap is just ridiculous, that sounds as prejudiced as saying all Chinese can't drive, or all blacks are bad, or all Jews are cheap, or all Greeks give it up the ***, or all blonde's are dumb... I mean I think each car should be judged on there own individual merit, just as each person should be judged the same way...

crawl under a Benz & see if there is any rust, tell me why a $50k BMW 5 series has more road noise than a $16k hundai...... or why a $60k jaguar can be had 5 years old for next to nothing... I know of plenty of foreign cars that have there share of issues that plague them.... I'm not going to even try to list them all, but to me, there are good & bad in all cars...

personally, I don't buy new cars & trade them in when there a few years old, I'd rather buy them a few years old & then keep them for a few years past that & I've seen some of the nightmares that can crop up on a foreign car when there out of warentee... better bring the big jar of Vaseline with you to the mechanic

I have an 06 accord and an 00 chrysler concorde. That chrysler (with the 3.2) has over 110k and it is still a very nice car, There is less noise than the accord and it has a lot more luxury for the price. I wouldnt hesitate to drive it accross the country 5 times. The accord is nice too, but the domestic market has a lot of good things too. My parents chrysler minivan, I am 29, but they got it when I was in 5th or 6th grade, is still running with over 300k and it has no rust.

I used to be an RX7 owner. Replaced engines often, and dealt with regular issues with very expensive parts. Still, a very fun car though.

the perfect car would be one with:

    German durability
    Japanese reliability
    French comfort
    American luxury

    Oh.... And ofcourse:

    Belgian knowhow

Edit: And maybe built by Koreans to keep it low-cost
