    USB HUB Question

I was all set to buy a usb hub but then I started hearing something about usb 2.0 vs 1.1. I am assuming that the 2.0 is relatively new and is backwards compatible. What new products are able to take advantage of the higher data transfer rates? Would I be just fine to go with the 1.1? Thanks

It's backwards compatible. 1.1 it probably fine unless you are using data intensive devices, like hard drives or cd-burners.

2.0 is much, much faster than 1.0 or 1.1, and is 100% backwards compatible. but if you dont have a usb 2.0 port on your computer (either a brand new board with onboard 2.0 ports, or a 2.0 pci card), the fact that its a 2.0 hub doesnt do anything above and beyond what a 1.1 hub would do. the only reason to pay more for a 2.0 hub now is if you have/plan to add 2.0 ports to you computer.

    one little thing.

if you use a usb 2.0 hub on a usb 2.0 port, and put one usb1.1 and one usb2.0 device in the same hub, i have been told it will all scale down to usb 1.1

so dont mix usb 1.1 and usb 2.0 devices.

One other thing be aware of the fact that there is actually a fairly limited power supply in the usb port (500 ma i think) and if you more than a few devices on an unpowered hub (one that doesnt power each outlet) you may get into problems with to little power to share amongst your devices ....

I havent experienced this myself, but one of my collegues have.

Sorry to go post digging but I found this thread while researching the need to have different USb devices on the same hub. I ran across this on Tom's Hardware site. Really a good read since I'm looking at a USB 2.0 DVD enclosure along with a couple of 1.1 devices on the same hub.

Basically find a multi-TT hub and you're set.
