If I join a local "makers" group they have a 3-d printer... Makes me wonder how hard it would be to make new dash panels...

you are not the only one that wants one..

those printers are far from the quality you get with powder or resin printing (check out this maker review of 3D printer at an "affordable" budget) and most are limited to 250x250x250mm in printing size. And if that isn't a show stopper the price certainly will do the trick -> "Price examples for a small figurine from sculpteo for normal white plastic: In 5 cm / 1.97 in : $42.00 - In 10 cm / 3.94 in : $137.00 - In 15 cm / 5.91 in : $305.00"

I believe my local Maker group depends on a yearly membership fee of like $20-30 and for the 3d printer it is just the cost of materials as long as you are a member. I really need to make it out to one of their meetings and see what they have. They were building a DIY version that was supposed to be reasonably priced and had reasonable resolution. But I really have no clue what they have without going there and looking at it.

For 305 though I would be better off with some bondo, fiberglass and lots of sanding...

after close to three weeks of waiting for my pcb boards and components, some fun with SMD skillet soldering (cklick here if you dare, but don't blame me if you burn down your house), realizing that I made a mistake with the memory card board and the volume control, I managed to put it all together

My timing on the volume control is still too short but that just requires a higher resistor on my LM555 setup and I can surely find the space for that somewhere in here

more updates in a few days...

it was actually quite easy to do the SMD soldering with a skillet (just don't take the one regularly used in the kitchen, your wife might not approve pcb frying). It took about 5min to heat up the solder past to melting point and apart from the tedious part of applying the solder past without a stencil it was much easier than trying to solder those components by hand. Unfortunately batchpcb does not do internal cutouts, so once all my testing is done I will probably use some other service to get the updated pcb done.

By the way all of the software used for this project is open-source

    OS: Kubuntu 12.04

    3D: FreeCAD

    PCB: KiCad

Here is a short demo of the working button interface tested with a youtube video. It seems though that the menu button doesn't work in full screen mode. On the home screen it works without any problem. Volume down and back button do not have the correct gpio assigned. Therefore, they don't work at the moment (software fix).

I am thinking this with one of Sno's full height boards and a nice ARM board might be something special...

    Just add radio and stir...
