It looks great, but consider making those 'pop-up' windows in the middle full-screen instead. If I'm looking for something in a list, I would want the list to be as big as possible. And if they behave like regular popups (as the 'back' button on the track list seems to imply) then the rest of the screen is basically just wasted while they are up.
A little confused by what you are saying... I think we make good use of the screen real estate as is. This design centers everything on screen so it is easier to read, and you know exactly where to look at all times. Stretching the lists to full screen would completely alter the design and theme, and if its just to take up space, well I consider that clutter. And we dont do clutter.
And none of these are "pop-ups." These are panels accessed from the main menu. They may pop-in, slide in, grow in... anything. The back button on the track list is there for navigating the list to the correct album/song/video that you want.
ws6vert,
My application will require that most functionality accessed by buttons on the left side of the screen. In this case, with the display centered in front of the user, left hand usage almost exclusively.
I have not begun to develop the UI (based on the advice here) as it seems to be a moving target.
How much o the UI can I do using conventional C# development techniques? Can the UI be built as Windows gadgets? I am settling on Windows 7 as my delivery platform (skinny down).
TIA,

This looks great, I really liked your work.
If I may, I wish you could remove some clutter from the interface a bit. For instance, I don't need a clock and the date. Why the bluetooth, battery and connection icon always on the front screen? Unless you're uncertain about the workings of your system or are still debugging things, this is completely unnecessary, IMHO, and yet most skins do that.
I miss more blank, free space. Maybe the top part, and when you click on it, a sliding down curtain with all the info would go down with all the info you'd need, a bit like iPhone's SB Settings, or Android phones. It could show date, time, bluetooth, internet connection, etc.
Also, I feel the icons are too inconsistent. Some colorful, some monochromatic, some 3D, some 2D, etc. So maybe this could be addressed?
Awesome to see Pandora making it into a front end, finally. Can't wait to see more, thank you for the teasers.
Cheers,
RH.

It's obvious that a skin cannot be all things to all users. I am beginning to sympathize with ws6very and others trying to make everyone happy.
For example, I prefer to have a clock on the screen most of the time (I used to use the HU for clock). I prefer right-handed operation, with most common functions being on the left-hand side of the screen. I would like to be able to change the "theme color" so it would more closely match the amber of my dash lights.
But in response to RH, something like the bluetooth/wifi indicator is handy. If for some reason you are no longer connected to your phone, how would you know to go check another screen until it's too late?
A possible solution be something just like Android, except the user can configure what items appear on the bar all the time, then drag the curtain down to see more items.
In any case, I like what I see and am willing use it what ever the choices are.
Keep the love alive ws6vert.
Cheers.
Well, I didn't mean to be just negative, I just pointed out what stood out for me.
Clock? I have a watch with me at all times, also my car have a clock too. So this is for me really redundant, but I understand not for all. Date? I hate that. I simply cannot understand the need for such on the screen at all times.
The android drop down thingy is a quick solution for all that. No big deal touching the top of the screen to reveal if your phone connected or not.
For a more constructive post, how about an icon set like that?
Even better, these ones:

Which are great because they're free even for commercial applications...What do you think?

Sorry RH. My bad. Didn't try to make things sound negative. Just that it will be difficult to make something that suits everyone and perhaps making many items user selectable would be the answer, although how much work that would be I don't know.
Cheers.
John
PS: The date doesn't bother me but I can also live without it.
Nah, don't worry about it. In the end you're right, it could be a lot of work.
