Just to clarify a few things...
The design was conceived around OM's skinning parameters. It's also designed to be generic enough to satisfy at least 70% of the users. Some users want a date and a clock, some users don't. I can't design it to suit everyone's needs. If you don't have use for the date and time, well I believe its in a location that won't impede your view from what you are looking for. But its location is also functional for people that do want to be shown the date and time.
As for the icons... the general idea at this stage is that they are user configurable. If you don't like an icon associated with a particular button, nothing is stopping you from downloading or drawing your own. We have already entertained the idea of having "icon packs" such as High Contrast (flat, white) icon sets that maximize usability in bright conditions. I'm not a graphic artist, the majority of the icons here are icons obtained from the internet that are free for commercial use, the others I labor over myself until I think they look good enough. I feel the ones chosen offer depth as well as indicate their function easily to the user. Some may be 2D others 3D, I honestly only know how to draw in black and white. Thats the main goal for the skin... intuitive operation so your eyes can focus back on the road.
Same for the indicators. The only indicators I have worked on at this point are the ones that are essential to most OM core elements. Alot of OM's plugins are internet data driven... thus the need for wifi (or 3G), in the future, Bluetooth will play a huge role. The battery icon will only show if its connected to a battery operated device (which for alot of users is a moot point). The new email plugin (spoiler alert) generates an indicator for your emails. I could go on an on, but point being, we estimate that 70% of the users would rather have the visual indication (date/time included), without the need of a "curtain" (extra button press) to see the information. They are subtle icons so again its not like they will be distraction when you are looking for something, but they are there for when you ARE looking for it.
I appreciate all the comments, I just wanted to reiterate what Jmullan said. We can't design to please 100% of all users. We can design to maximize intuitiveness and functionality. I will review all these comments with the team, and we will make decisions together. FYI, release is fore-casted for 0.9 or along with 1.0. There are more teasers I could post (animated weather?)... but we'll see.
Absolutely gorgeous!! Granite i'm only a newbie around here and am working on my first CarPC. I had originally settled on using RR or CF for a front end, but continued do some reasearch, and this is when I came across OpenMobile. I must say I really like what the OpenMobile team has been up too. I think i've just read about every post on the OpenMobile forum! I hope to see this on my CarPC in the near future!! And will be as well rounded and work as well as it looks!
Keep up the great work!! Any idea on a time frame for an official release to newbies, like myself. I really would like to hold out installing any front end on my CarPC till this comes out (don't want to bloat my system with uneaded crap from RR, CF)
How about an update of the road map (http://openmobile.sourceforge.net/wi...ex.php/Roadmap) then? It hasn't been updated since March. In other words, and I think I speak for the masses here, you are KILLING US with these teasers!! :nutz:

I've been doing that and I've been Getting and building the code just to see what the latest changes are. On a side note, I've been poking around in the code learning how you guys are doing things as I'm hoping to find a way to contribute at some point.

Sorry guys, all the awesome eye candy will be ready when it's ready. With the multitude of plugins justchat and the other developers are churning out, its alot of work to generate skin designs for each. But look for more the closer OM gets to 1.0
OMG, I actually like that skin. Dont hate me for saying this, but it has a CF look and feel, but actually layed out a lot better. I will say that certain things look really corney to me. The thumbs up and thumbs down icons, The way the speak and back buttons look... I think you should simplify them. The one thing I really think is weird is the fact that in certain screens there are 2 play buttons.
Please I hope this skin is the route OM takes. If yes your getting that much closer to pulling me over to OM.
I will say this though, not sure if it is skin related, but can you guys please make support for Mitch's UAS device. I have XM, HD and use the 3rd port to push music from headphones to main speakers (since the push feature in CF is kinda retarded) for DUAL Zone, all connected to the line in. If I remember correctly, a plugin had to be made so the UAS knew when to switch to what port.
I don't mean to sound, rude? But IMO write up how to skin for your application and see what designers can come up with.
The thing with CF is that it looks professional, it looks defined, it's clean and simple and has a smart look and feel to the entire thing.
The one here looks bulky, undefined, a bit cluttered and reminds me of the cheap headunits you get from China on eBay...
Look at all of the major media devices currently on the market, everything looks sleek, smart and simple.
Or... you could start your own design, if its not your taste.

They didnt teach me how to draw, and I personally think it looks good, but I'm biased. So until you can draw something better... quotes such as "The one here looks bulky, undefined, a bit cluttered and reminds me of the cheap headunits you get from China on eBay..." aren't worth my time to consider.
