@Justchat_1 will the media plugin have any problem handling my over 40000 tracks? i have yet to find linux software that is fast enough, i have to wait at least 10 seconds while it searches, and then close to a minute for playback to start. that is unless i go find the files my self, and open them up in the movie player. just hoping it will be fast enough

    oh, +1 for native navigation

Well my music collection is just shy of 100000 and it hasn't even hesitated. Thats the beauty of threading and a good database. Of course i'm only 30% of the way there so i'm not putting anything in stone until its done and I can have that confirmed by other users but it's incredible how different it is browsing by artists/albums compared to winamp, itunes or wmp.

Glad to be of help with the OBD stuff. And I feel ya regarding the midterms, as I just finished up all of mine.

    Native navigation:
It sounds great from an open source feature point of view, but any real advances regarding this type of integration would be fairly time consuming I'm sure. This meaning: If it doesn't work/isn't reliable then it will never be used by the end user. Im sure most people are like me in that I really can't stand to get incorrect directions from an updated software whose sole purpose is to navigate me from one point to another. So to remedy, most end users will go in search of a licensed program (Garmin, IG, etc.) and hope that the developer can add ways to integrate these programs via plugin. So I think short term the goal and scope of OM should support navigation via the old fashioned embedded app + plugin way. Long term, go ahead and add the basics to the framework or core that would allow easier integration if this were to happen.

All that being said, I'm still in total support of any sort of effective open navigation API, although I am unaware of any open projects regarding this (ie. routing algorithms and such) other than Navit, so any progress in this area would have to stem from a community group similar to OSM or MP3car. So If this is to come to fruition, I vote that it starts as a side project ("OpenRoute") similar to OpenOBD. Also it would probably take the genius of more than one developer (so probably best to start the project in the OpenSource GPS forum), and I feel it should also be completely cross platform, because as of now Mac has nada for gps and linux is about (nada + 1).

And lastly... +1 for the Widcomm/Microsoft, and Im sure MP3car wouldn't mind lending some sort of support as long as the development remained open.

    EDIT:
I misspoke. I meant to say that I dont know of any open source navigation other than Navit that has the potential at the moment.

Well I certainly don't have the time to do a nav engine from scratch. There are a few different routing engines out there http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/R...ers#comparison. The goal would be to use that or even the core routing algorithm itself (http://www.codeproject.com/KB/recipe...lculation.aspx) but to use our own map renderer. This would ensure the maps always look great in OM but that the routing is done via a tried and tested method.

    UnusuallyGenius:
I need ideas for how to incorporate status messages into the UI and a settings button into the music screens. The status messages are things like "indexing xyz.mp3..." so it doesn't need to be too prominent just visible.

Sounds good, I wasnt aware of the different routing engines out there other than Navit. Which one are you looking at the most right now?

I am entertaining a few different ideas.

Few questions, do you want it visible on every screen like the top bar is? or do you just want it to show up in the respective plugin, using your example, "indexing xyz.mp3" would only show up while in the media plugin and not in any other, since it doesnt pertain to it?
Do you want it to stay visible until the action is completed?
Do you want it to go away if you click on it, to confirm that you saw it?

These question will help me choose optimal position and look for the status message.

Also, would you like the music setting to be accessible just from the media plugin or from the media bad, accessible from all screen?

Not entirely sure where I want it-as i haven't seen this done anywhere else except street deck. The idea is to display the status of background tasks not necessarily just music indexing so I think having it displayed in all screens would be ideal. But considering that its in all screens it should probably be small enough and in the right location so as to not interfere with any other plugins. It should probably just display for a second or two and then disappear-not really require any user interaction.

I thought about just doing a progress bar as one of the icons in the top bar but then thought it might be too general. Maybe that is the best option though?

Music settings would be in only the music related screens...music selection, music queue and music search. Although if we keep the icon generic enough maybe we could use it for multiple things (like radio settings for the radio plugin, etc.)

Justchat_1 I am joining the National Guard, and sometime in the next four months or so I will be shipping off to Basic. I just wanted to give you a heads up, so when I disappear for awhile, it will not be a surprise

Well its good to hear you will be joining the guard.....and a shame to lose your help with the project. Hopefully, we can bring some of your ideas to life before you ship off.
