I like the idea of this project, so I thought I'd try to help out a bit and came up with a couple of rough menu interfaces for the main menu. Feedback is welcome

. The icons used below are dual-licensed GPL/CC, as a part of the Oxygen Project.

I think they are both good concepts and look good, but I was thinking 2 things

1) The icons should be the same regradless of their size or layout

2) Make it editable by the user. They can easily choose the size of the text and either they can choose the size of the icons or the icons can auto-adjust depending on the text size.

Another idea would for it to switch interfaces depending on if the car is moving or not. It'd be preferable not to have to read while the car is moving

Definately. I used different icons just to show "different options" for similar functions. The Compass and the Map could both be GPS (although I prefer the map, since the coloration helps).

The first idea is interesting, and one I didn't think of. Personally I prefer to use no text on the menus. Text tends to make us "want" to read, and changing the context menu's when driving or parked makes an interface harder to learn.

So my vote is for the larger icons. I can definately work on it more, but I'm not exactly sure what 8 icons should be "main menu" icons.

Agree (and its currently pretty easy to do with the main menu) and Agree (although its not possible until navigation is finished).

Concept art looks good - and I agree that having just icons might be easier on the Main Menu. Theres a few things that it looks like you were unsure of so i'll throw some input in - Media controls might be cool as a tab on the bottom that pops up into a media controls menu. Also might need a place for a home button, a back button and a volume button.
