Also, if you buy the software only version, I dont believe you can update the maps. I was on the phone with Garmin the other day and it sounds like you can only register the software by registering the GPS unit that it comes with. And if you cant register it then you cant get updated maps. A lifetime update subscription is around a $100 and you get to download new maps every quarter.

I'll have to verify that information. I was still under the impression that you could purchase map updates singly. I'll take a look over at LaptopGPSworld and on the garmin site. Actually I show my version of GMPC as registered online. Capcadet can you not register your GMPC software on garmin via the MyGarmin link?

I have the version that came with the receiver. I was told by the Garmin rep to register the serial on my receiver and that that was the only way it could be done. There is a thread here on it and from what I can gather from it, they have learned that as well.

There are 2 versions of Mobile PC, one is software-only and the other comes with a GPS. Although I can't find the Garmin page you are discussing, I suspect it would only apply to the version that includes a GPS.

Still, if this is the direction Garmin is taking with Mobile PC, it could mean a new version of the program itself might not be forthcoming. The software version of Mobile PC is the same price or less than the cost of a map update.

I logged into my account, selected the Maps drop down list, selected Update Maps. On the next screen click on the "blue Check for Updates button), next screen connects to your device. Mine says in blue, "GPS 20x Software Version 2.60" Click on those words, it Garmin will find the Serial number of your GPS and then the next screen shows (2) choices for updates. The first is "nuMaps Lifetime" North America, the second is "nuMaps Onetime".

Choose which one you want and push "add to cart"
The onetime version has a choice of download or order on CD. Hope this helps

It's not even possible to register Mobile PC on Garmin's site. Not through your MyGarmin account and not through the generic registration page. So it's not possible to use the "Update Maps" function on MyGarmin to check for updates to Mobile PC because you can't register it.

Thats some of what theyre saying.

Interesting. Well on the other hand, it is cheaper to buy another software only version of GMPC with the updated maps than to purchase a onetime map update...

Speaking of map updates, it says I have one. I'll have to check it out.

Reading that other thread, seems to me that software only version owners are just as far ahead to re-buy the software only version when it has new maps. If, as they say, it's more expensive to buy map updates than to buy the software. That would work for me. Just get support to email when there is new maps available.

Honestly, if your navigation hasnt led you down a dead end road, there is really no need to worry about updating maps except maybe once every 2 or 3 years. Thats my opinion at least. As another option, i believe Mapsource maps can be transfered onto GMPC as well.
