Okay. The plan then is install my board and chip when it arrives. Get things to where there are now. Then I'll get enough pieces to expand to at least one of the rear zones and see how it goes, specifically see how the system runs with a USB video adapter.

Hopefully short-circuit gets more monitors. While I already have one in the dash, and it pretty much washes out with too much sunlight, the headrests would typically get less.

Sorry for the edits, but I think if I am good to go with the second zone, I may replace my front monitor with a better unit and put the existing one for the 3rd zone.

FWIW, I've got an i3 based HTPC client (running SageTV) that only draws about 55W playing back a BluRay.

EDIT: Just checked on Newegg, and it would end up costing about $60 more to go with an ECS mini-itx h55 board, and an i3-530.
Sorry I missed this earlier. You are probably right. But the board is ordered now, and another $60 right now would have stretched my hobby budget.

However, even though I sometimes lose money in the longer run, I rather enjoy trying to make the minimum work. With the help of you folks, I was lucky to avoid some waste by going a little too underpowered. And the current board and chip are costing about the same as the original ATOM board I was thinking about.

Please keep your ideas coming though.

    Cheers,
    John

OK, so at this point we just got to wait till you can play with it, then we can go from there.

Well, just to keep the thread fresh, tracking of my NewEgg order shows the CPU chip is in the neighborhood. The board should not be far behind. They shipped from two different warehouses.

Just can't wait to install and see what difference just that particular upgrade does for me!

I think you will be pleased. Once you go bigger, you cant go small again, lol.

I remember the days when my first Car PC was VIA M100000. That board was such a piece of cr@p. i remember trying to show off to my Mom and got a big BSOD error. That day I retired the board. Bought a AMD Dual Core Turion 64 x2. Was such a fast processor, to bad the MoBo was so glitchy. Now I am on the Zotac and pairing it with Quad Core. It seems everytime I change I go bigger and bigger. Just pray you dont fall into that mind set.

I hate that! You think it's going smooth, then demo, then BAM.

I hope not! Well, there is always that chance.... Once you taste it. I know what bigger and better can do, just on our house machines. But I don't want to dedicate a whole trunk to a car system.

And the chip arrived. Makes me even more itchy waiting for the Zotac board. Damn them

Ok this thing about going bigger is starting to sound perverted, lol. Well my install doesnt take the whole trunk, maybe 60%. My trunk area is small anyways unless I drop the back seats, then I have more space.

This is the old setup. Its going to be extended a bit more. I am basically leaving enough space for my dogs to get in and out the car when I need to take them places.

I am impressed by your project. And have nothing bad to say whatsoever. We just have two different goals. You will give all passengers the ultimate experience. I am trying to be minimalistic while giving a reasonable experience.

However, if like many things I do, I get bored with the current setup, I will find incremental ways to up it, weather it needs it or not

Another "however": I am painfully impatient. Instead of waiting for more hobby budget money, I will get lesser value things. Like ordering those silly USB audio dongles before finding out how bad they are. And I will settle on the VM70 monitors rather than spend bigger bucks just so I can "have em now".

In the end, I will sell off the bits I have after on eBay or to somebody close that wants to build an ICE as a good starter unit.

It's just a hobby. It costs money. And it's a learning experience. And I enjoy it.

For a change of pace, I forget if you are planning to, or already do, interface to OBD. Are you? I hope to. And hope that OM will have some really creative plug-ins to take advantage of it. Like suggesting close fuel stations when you are low on fuel, etc.

That is my ultimate goal.... I want all users to have an awesome experience, but an even better shared experience. I hope it works out though.

I was like that, but after 2 failed attempts, I learned to be patient, and now Im going on year 4. As for the lower priced items, cheaper doesnt always mean $h!+ products. You just got unlucky. The Dongles I paid for were very cheap, but work awesome, even with 5 of them connected. The VM70 screens are awesome screens, basically if you spend bigger on screens then your a dumb @$$. I hate that other companies make their screens so expensive for no reason. The Lilliput headrest version, 300+ bucks, thats insane. The VM70 is just as good. Only thing is, it is CCFL based. They do have a newer screen that is LED based and only 20.00 bucks more. Maybe you can go for that one. I didnt bother with LED because the back of the car is dark so the extra brightness wasnt needed.

Thats my hope too. I am actually in a waiting game with OM and CF. If CF stays on schedule though, the feature I am looking for will be out by Thanksgiving (Multizone). I dont know when the skinning aspect of OM will be updated, which is whats holding me back on OM.

Woo hoo. The board arrived today. Already swapped out. Windows didn't like it. Of course, it is using the old Atom drivers and no new ones.

I guess I will just re-install and go for the 64 bit while I'm at it. It's always nice to have a nice clean install anyway.

    Stay tuned for progress reports.
