Interesting discover - or too Obvious?

I thought I would share this in case anyone in the future comes across the same thing and searches the forum for answers.

For a little while now, at least with OM 0.8, I found that every so often a music track would stop at the end of a song, remaining in the Now Playing banner at t the top. I was forced to advance it to the next song manually. Every so often the banner was actually blank.

This puzzled me, as I did not notice if it was the same set of songs or not, as I play my entire collection in shuffle mode.

As it happens, I use TVersity in my home to serve my movies and music to other clients in the house. This weekend I added my music library. TVersity would stop/quit while indexing the collection. Removing songs that stopped it would find even more.

Now I'm getting irritated at this point. The songs would play in other players (WMP, iTunes, Media Player Classic).

I decided that somehow these files may be corrupt in some fashion. So I downloaded MP3TAG as it can re-write files. And while I was in there I would complete more of the tag info and add some missing cover art.

Well, after forcing re-write of the files, lo-and-behold TVersity would index the entire collection. Beautiful. So time to erase and re-load the library into the car and delete the database and config files.

OM still had some problems, but this time telling me a particular song failed. But, after I exited OM and restarted it (re-index at every start) the problems started to disappear. That is to say, it was like OM corrected a bad item or marked it as bad. I have yet to check if it now ignores that song file altogether somehow. I suppose I can again delete the database to see if that is the case, but I'm sure the devs will step up and offer some explanations of what I encountered. Otherwise, at this point, the collection plays fine. Even the crackle/pop between "some" songs has gone.

So my conclusion is that quite a few of my songs had damaged ID3 tag info in them and the re-write fixed them up.

    Cheers,
    John

Corrupted or damaged ID3 tags have caused problems with many front-ends.
But this is excellent information, not to mention good advice!
Have you looked in the FAQ yet?
    How about the Wiki?

Under normal circumstances, a signature would go here.

Thanks. I may have spoken too soon though. Not sure. Took a 2 hour trip this morning, the playback does the same things.

Also, some videos refuse to play.

Of worthy note, all these things play flawlessly in Windows Media Player.

    The search for answers continues.

    Cheers,

Okay. It appears that it may be the MP4 videos that don't work, and the AVI do. Although I would think that the OM Player can handle them.

I'm headed out to switch out the MP4 versions with AVI versions. We shall see....

Okay. The AVI versions work flawlessly.

The conversion process to MP4 (to save space), while fine on my portable players (iPod, Android) and even my XBMC client, and WMP in the car, OM Player didn't like them.

No problem, I can live with AVI, just a curiousity more than anything.

    Cheers.

Test with media player classic not wmp to see what your system supports/doesn't support.... wmp can play some files internally that the operating system doesn't support on its own. I recommend http://www.cccp-project.net/ to handle codecs for any media you might want to play.

    We always recommend this:
    http://www.free-codecs.com/download/...how_Filter.htm
to fix the playback bug thats existed in windows since XP

Cool. Thanks Justin. I'll check those codecs out, and MPC, perhaps later today. I was unaware that WMP had some built-in stuff. Just exposing another gap in my knowledge. <sigh>

it looks like this has come up with a few different mp3 file.. erm bugs? it IS something within the files it's self that OM doesn't like. I had a big chunk of mine that would do this exactly, and apparently they had some "garbage" at the end of em. though fixing them all, didn't actually fix all of em (luckily I made a backup.) some it made worse.. chopping off the last 15 or so seconds

I'll do the bumbling, and i'll be the idiot.
if you've got a "stupid" question, search for some of mine!

The decoder built into windows doesn't like certain tags in vbr mp3s...the second link I posted should fix that. 0.9 will be including some codecs in the installer that can optionally be installed with OM so you don't need to download anything 3rd party.

MP3Tag was supposed to fix these. Well, the tags that are at the end of the file. Since it didn't really help, I assume it's the actual last bit of music data. One of the links Justin posted lead me to MP3Parse and I will try that as soon as someone here at home lets me monopolize their windows machine (my home unit is a Macbook).

But in the end, if it doesn't help, I'll be okay until 0.9

    Cheers.
